1. What the crap?!
All I can say is, perhaps the craziest five minutes on TV happened at the end of this episode. Wow.

Wow. That is all I could say after this one. I’m thinking maybe supe is going to have to learn his time travel that he did in the movie (when Lois Lane died in that fissure) in the first episode next season.
Wow.
But unbelievably good acting on the part of Allison Mack.
Time travel… has to happen.

Talk about packing in the suspense and cliff-hangers! The pace dragged a bit for my taste, but that’s just me.

Was it me, though, or did this feel as though they might have been starting the wrapup to make 4 the final season? I hope not, but with the suggestion of Clark getting closer to being Superman, Lionel’s pending death, Lex showing a very nastily vindictive side, and the breach between him and the future Superman becoming that wide, it sure seems like it.

While it’s fun and all I really despise 3 month cliffhangers. It’s just a stupid way of doing things. They could have just had all the changes happen, and have Kal-El/Clark/Superman pop out and leave what happens at the end of that until next season but instead we’ve got a 15 min montage of goofiness with every main character having something ‘bad’ happen to them.

Maybe it’s just me, but I really am not a fan of that type of work. It wasn’t spellbinding as some of them (my personal best ‘oh shit’ cliffhanger was Best of BOth Worlds Part 1) it was like ‘make em vanish so we don’t pay them in next season’ thing.

That being said, I think Smallville is the best ‘Scifi/Fantasy’ show on TV right now. And as an avid Star Trek fan (no conventions thank you) that’s saying a lot from me.

Just glad it’s not on Fox, or it’d been cancelled by now.

2. Chloe’s Fate
Spoilers below, but hidden.

The last few minutes were quite confusing and full of cliffhangers. One for just about every main character except Martha (Unless the house was going to burn down from the symbol :)).

After careful frame-by-frame dissection (thanks to tivo) of the final scene, my wife and I are under the impression that: it was not the house Chloe just entered that exploded. The porch/door/windows were all quite different, plus it looked like the explosion was reflecting in the window, not coming from inside.

Of course who knows what really happened…

Impressions differ… I was thinking that the explosion was either real, but Chloe survived, or faked by the FBI. Either way, Chloe is now in the witness protection program, and therefore not “Chloe” anymore. Perhaps we’ve seen the origins of Lois Lane? Remember that Chloe did use Lois’s name in a previous ep. On top of that, some remnants of Chloe’s kryptonite powered truth serum breath would serve an investigative reporter well.

Of course, I also have my pet theory that the “Jor-El” that keeps going after Clark is really Brainiac, pretending to be the real Jor-El. It fits all the facts IMO, but seems a bit too far out there to be the truth.

That’s not a bad theory, but I would go with the Eradicator over Braniac. The Eradicator was a weapon that would protect and preserve the way of Kryptonian life. It possessed vast capabilities including unlimited information storage, sensory systems that could sense half way across the galaxy and the ability to restructure matter at will. Thinking the Eradicator dangerous Superman hid it out of the way in the Antarctic. Out of sight the Eradicator build a massive Fortress in trying to fulfil it program of preserving the Kryptonian way of life. It intended to turn Earth into a new Krypton, but was defeated by Superman who hurled it into the Sun. The Eradicator absorbed solar energy and increased in power a thousand fold. Now taking a humanoid form it attempted to turn Earth into a new Krypton again before being dissipated by Superman and Emil Hamiliton.
It would not surprise me if this is the inspiration for the ‘Jor-El’ of the series. Especially if his personality/memories were used as the base imprint for the programming.

And the whole “conquest” obsession doesn’t remind you of general Zod? I
sorta get the feeling that the whole “rebirth” thing is a hint that another
Kryptonian will take over Kal El’s body.

Side note: Lex has a chunk of red and green K? That’s interresting…

Chloe stated earlier in the episode that she was only in protective custody for the duration of the trial. Obviously that could change, but an explosion seems a little extreme for a temporary measure. Also, I think the FBI agent pulling away had a little too evil look on his face for it to be faked.

I’m don’t really have an opinion about Chloe’s fate, but I’m rather encouraged for next season. It felt like 90% of this season were Clark and Lana dancing around each other. Maybe I’m just not a romantic, but that was a real turn off for me. I get the impression next season could be much more about Clark growing into Superman than teenage dating.

BTW, Chloe’s death opens the door for Clark to become the editor of the torch.

• Re: Chloe’s Fate
I agree with your assesment of Chole’s fate and I’ve not had time to TiVo dissect it. I noticed the window first and thought that was odd.

also it seemed that when they did the aerial view that was a pretty horrendously large place for a witness protection place…

Guess we’ll figure it out Sep/October.

• Re: Chloe’s Fate
Well, it’s always seemed to me that Chloe has to go away somehow. She’s supposed to be the ace reporter with all the connections and yadda yadda — so how is it that when Clark ends up at the Daily Planet he can’t put in a good word for her? Is she even mentioned in canon? :)

Now all that’s left is for Pete to die for Clark’s secret, moving him from being uncertain & cautious about telling people his secret to being downright paranoid.

3. Hellgirl?
I’m Still Not Convinced The Physics Of Appling Pressure Down On The Front Of An Object (Car) And Causing The Back End Of It To Bounce So High That It Flips Over A Person.

I Know It’s Fantasy, But That Move, Neet As It May Look, Seems So Far From Possible It hurts My Head.

I havn’t seen the episode but downward force on the front of the car would initially raise the backend in the air. Then if the front end was pushed into the ground so it slowed down significantly or even stopped the momentum of the back end would cause it to continue through and the front end would become a pivot causing the back end to flip over.

Flip Over, But Summersault Safely Over A Person?

I mean if we’re going to be picky the ‘explode into a fireball’ thing is a bit far fetched as well… :)

• Re: Hellgirl?
You’re assuming that all she was using was super-strength. Keep in mind that the Matrix incarnation of Supergirl had telekinetic abilities and the current Superboy (Superman/Lex Luthor clone) has “tactile” telekinesis – we could even get into the Byrne-refreshed Superman’s ability to lift virtually any weight while flying because it’s a function of “willpower” but that might be going overboard. It’s still silly, but “Kara” demonstrated at least one power (the distintegration touch) quite different from Clark’s so adding another isn’t any more ridiculous than the rest of the show. :)

• Re: Hellgirl?

Flip Over, But Summersault Safely Over A Person?

I don’t think that a this should have to be rationalized, when “Kara” has the strength to do so in the first place. I somehow don’t think it’s possible to make a fantastic situation logical. It also seemed out of character for Clark to be so cold with Lex, although the end scene with Lana was unbearably predictable. When I was watching everyone “die”, I was thinking that it might be some cracked-out dream or something, because these characters still exist in the comics.

4. A moment of silence
I believe that we should take a moment, and reflect on the loss of an important aspect of Smallville, namely the Magnificent Bastard’s Magnificent Mane. It is a hairstyle that shall be missed.

Seriously – that shocked the hell out of me almost as much as Chloe (which is odd, as I’ve been predicting her death for a long, long time, yet I never saw the Barber coming for Lionel).

I was also impressed with how they had Welling lie on the symbol-shape at the end – seemed to be a little heraldic of what is to come.

• Re: A moment of silence

I just watched it, and I’m pretty sure he’s still wearing sneakers. He’s naked (hand covering jewels) yet he’s wearing shoes… that’s just tacky.

Didn’t notice the shoes – I suppose that’s what I get for downloading via BitTorrent

That is tacky though. I wonder why they wouldn’t have Welling take off the shoes? Perhaps the Man of Steel hurt his toe…

5. lionel’s thoughts
Could all of the scenes actually be lionel’s thoughts? His plans? The way the scene kept flashing back to lionel, maybe these scenes were lionel’s plans to take out chloe and lex.
