Weekly Comic Discussion

This looks like a very good
week
for Marvel fans, with Joss Whedon’s first
issue of Astonishing X-Men, as well as new
entries in Secret War, Supreme
Power
, and Ultimate X-Men, with the
latter being Brian K. Vaughn’s first issue,
introducing Ultimate Mr. Sinister. I’ll try to make
sure at least Astonishing is reviewed right away, as
I try to catch up on my backlogged reviews.

    SPOILER WARNING:

I can’t believe they killed off Beast just like that. That romance brewing between him and Storm was getting really interesting. So sad :/. I trust Bendis though and he must have an ultimate(pun intended) reason for it.

Ultimate Spiderman was pretty surprising too. Are you going to review that story arch, fiziko? I don’t know if I liked Gwen finding out his identity, seems a bit too early for me. She ends up being a superhero/villain in the original series doesn’t she? There’d have to be some major writing kung-fu to bring back Doc Oct after melting his arms too(but again, I’m sure Bendis has something planned). I’m sure we’ll see Doc Oct again before or while the movie comes out.

I picked up the first 10 issues of Darkness on a bundle sale, I haven’t read it yet but it looks pretty cool – I love the Witchblade universe. Anyone else familiar with it?

I was hoping they were leading toward Beast joining The Ultimates – some of his best moments were as an Avenger, but if the Xeditors have dibs on regular universe Beast, maybe Ultimate Beast could have gotten his shot to play with the big boys. Oh well.

In the original series, Gwen died. Gobby threw her off the George Washington Bridge, Spidey shot a web at her, but her neck snapped – no chance at heroics or supervillainy for her. There was a later clone of her created by the Jackal, but we try not to speak of the c-word.

  2. Supreme Power #10
Zarda really creeps me out. Just … creepy weird.

I hope Astonishing‘s continued run will meet expectations, though. Cassaday does some really, really nice work (a little uneven at times, but his pencils are still damn hard to beat), but I’ve not been real impressed by Whedon so far (not bad, but not exceptional, either). Can’t say I was very interested in Buffy or Angel, though.

    • Whedon’s comic work

From the admittedly little of Astonishing that I’ve read in preview, I just don’t think Whedon gets the voices of the characters right. Kitty, in particular, reads too much like a brunette Buffy. That’s also a weakness I’ve been noticing more and more on his TV shows; too many of his characters are written similarly and in contrast to their previous characterization. Especially on Angel. I thought the best writers on that show were those who are not Joss. After the first year or so, he just never seemed to get their voices right. It’s almost like the characters moved on, but he still wrote them as they once had been and were no longer. (Sorry ’bout the tangent.)

Anyway, I will be picking this up and hope Whedon does a better job than he did with the disappointing Fray. That book I ultimately could have done without and while it had an interesting set-up, I felt that it just kind of fell apart at the end and petered out weakly rather than concluding satisfactorily.

  3. Supreme Power
    Warning!

This is a very naked issue of Supreme Power, which isn’t entirely a good thing. Saggy mummy boobies. Prism’s the only one who gets to keep his clothes on, but at least there’s no gratuitious full frontal shot of Hyperion.

For a fish chick, Aquaman’s looking seriously hot.
