And the new Enterprise showrunner is…

This
Cinescape article
has all the info. Braga is
taking a step back as showrunner (although both he
and Berman will still be involved) and allowing Manny
Coto, current writer and creator of Odyssey
5
, to step up and take over as showrunner.

  1. Hmmm
I really liked the Odyssey 5 story line. This could be really good news.

Or, it couldn’t be, because Odyssey 5 vanished.

  2. ?
Odysses 5 was amazing! I only caught the first 5 episodes though, did the series get cancelled?

And how the HELL did Angel and Odyssey 5 get cancelled when they’re still running Mutant X?

For the record, Mutant X got cancelled on April 28th. They’re still showing reruns (ala the original Star Trek), but there’s no new episodes. I was going to make some pity comment about how there may be justice in the ‘verse after all, but then I remember all the terrible, non-scifi shows that are still running.

Yes it did. Although there are unaired episodes “available” if you want. I really loved that show, it makes me really sad that they canned it… and I don’t get emotional over much. Unforunately I think sci-fi has been declared dead.

      • Re: ?
uhm, details on the ‘unavailable’ ones?

I’m really annoyed at Showtime for killing Odyssey 5 and Jerimiah. They were
both great shows. Fortunately Dead LIke Me is on so that’s what keeps me
subscribed. Well that and Penn and Teller’s Bullshit! series.

I think Mutant X finally went the way of the Dodo because the studio went under.

This assumes that Andromeda and Mutant X come out of the same studio

  3. Great News
This is really good news because I’ve been noticing that most of the good shows lately have been written by Manny…

      Ssshhhhh! Don’t tell Berman!!!

  4. Mixed Blessing

I, for one, welcome some new blood into the mix. I haven’t seen Odyssey 5, but the critics all seemed to like it.

My only hesitation is that Coto is the same guy that brought us “Star Kid” and “Dr. Giggles.”

  5. Odyssey 5 was pretty darn good…
hopefully this will improve Enterprise. But I’m not optimistic, to be honest. And yes, Odyssey 5’s first season is available online, all 20 (22?) episodes. And Andromeda & Mutant X were the same studio… sad that the reason they’re not on the air was not because they were bad TV, but because the studio went under (ratings were actually above Buffy, IIRC – damn pathetic).

SciFi on TV comes and goes. The key, imho, is doing a smart/dumb approach. Like the X-Cops episode of X-files. Do a basic show people can like and watch, and have a uber story for people to figure out. Don’t make it where a casual viewer can’t watch 1 episode. The X-Cops episode is really a good example. Others would be Dark Angel (dumb: beautiful babe kicks ass. smart: uberplots, Mutant Nation, etc).

  6. La la laaaaaaaa
There is no new season of Enterprise. The show ended. All loose ends were tied. Captain Bakula gave his life for Mankind. All outstanding issues have been laid to rest. La la la laaaaaaaaa! I can’t hear you! I’m not listening!!! I’m taking it off TiVo! Laaaa laaaaa laaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!

  7. Manny’s Enterprise Accomplishments
Many has written or done teleplay on 5 episodes:

    Similitude
Brought forward some interesting development between Trip and T’Pol but the captain was still unfortunately flip-flopping on his morals

    Chosen Realm
This was a direct rip-off of a TOS Episode without shame.

    Harbinger (Teleplay by Manny Coto)
Archer treated a mysterious alien horribly by telling Phlox not to give him pain killers. And this long before Archer knew about the Sphere Builders.

    Azati Prime (Co-authored with B&B)
The Enterprise J was a cool idea, although it was poorly executed. This episode did do quite a bit to further the story line, and it was one of the better episodes from season 3. It was ultimately a pivotal episode for the story arc.

    The Council
Another good episode. This is probably the best episode of the season and was done completely by Manny. Bravo!

So overall, not a great record but it shines in comparison to everything done by B&B in season 3. Here’s hoping he can make the show worth watching for the seasoned Trek-fans.

    • Re: Manny’s Enterprise Accomplishments
I keep telling myself he was getting his trek legs on the first few episodes. :)

      • Re: Manny’s Enterprise Accomplishments
I thought Chosen Realm was the worst episode ever. Not only did they pick the most ridiculous storyline ever (alien Taliban taking over the ship), but it was boring too. I don’t know how they managed to cram so much crap into forty-odd minutes. It was even more terrible than most of season 1 and 2’s efforts. You’d think a starship would have security protocols to prevent them being taken over but it’s a proven fact that a starship is commandeered by the enemy in one out of every 2 episodes.

Azati Prime was the polar opposite. Once it got going, it was one of the best episodes ever. My jaw hit the floor during the final battle — especially at the cliffhanger. I’ve always wanted to see an episode of Trek like this. B&B have always been too cowardly to go for it, preferrig instead to rely on filler turd like Chosen Realm.

        • Re: Manny’s Enterprise Accomplishments
Evidence to back my claims about starships gettign commandeered: Voyager got captured God knows how many times, usually by the Kazon. Why would the Kazon need Voyager when their own Predator class battleships kick its arse in every episode.

Don’t even get me started on the Enterprise D. The smaller the group that tries to take it, the better — e.g. three people getting taken over by aliens, two Klingons, and Data with a homing device.

How many times has the NX-01 been captured (Ferengi, Chosen Realm blokes) or at least rendered totally helpless (Borg, Xindi, ysterious aliens in Fight or Flight — and my mates call this the “Suliban Special”)?

I’m led to believe that even Commander Riker’s abnormal genetic twin got in on the action by nicking the Defiant. (The Federation’s greatest fighter and the only one using Romulan technology, nice one Sisko)

  8. Slightly off topic comment…
Sorry if this seems slightly off topic but the thought just came to me and I had to share it.

My thought is this – Enterprise hasn’t broken any cannon, is following history exactly… if you take ONE simple presumption that the entirety of the show is actually set in the Mirror Universe. All the temporal war events, the Xindi, the Borg (oooh that one still grates!) could all make sense, it could all fit in if this was actually the mirror universe.

Dragging it back to the thread I think that Manny Coto could be the one to turn the series around and this is the kind of plot twist I think, from what he has doen before, he could write (and writye well enough it doesn’t seem like Deus Ex Machina)

    Anyway, thats just a thought.

    • Re: Slightly off topic comment…
I keep telling myself the Borg episode was the reason that Q knocked them forward to see the Borg already expanding in their direction. But yeah, I was really annoyed with that one.

Otherwise, why would Picard have never heard of the borg on the first encounter?

I’m ashamed at myself. I love the mirror universe and I didn’t really think of that. Whether they intended that to be so from the beginning or not, it would be a great way to fix things. Plus, it’s the beginning of a whole new world that they can do just about anything in as long as they stay true to the points when we’ve seen the mirrorverse.

There’s just one problem: how can they make everything go evil without it seeming hokey or forced? They’ve already gone a few steps in the wrong direction with the Nazaliens.

      • Mirrror, Mirror

Also, humans seemed fundamentally different in the Mirror Universe: inherently more ruthless, sexual, et cetera. Exactly how things could be so different and yet the same people could exist is an interesting question, but never mind. Enterprise doesn’t feel like the Mirror Universe, and I doubt they’d go this route. They’ve devoted too much time to the temporal interference, and establishing Archer as key to founding the Federation. I think the best we can hope for would be that the “cliffhanger” twist results in a significantly altered timeline.

        • Re: Mirrror, Mirror
I don’t know why people get so hung up about continuity. We can always pretend the events in Enterprise never happened. But remember: it is set 100 years before Kirk and 220 years before Picard first met the Borg and the Ferengi…plenty of time to lose information about those races or for them to become almost like a legend (could also explain how Seven of Nine’s parents got assimilated decades before Picard did).

Also, B&B don’t give a toss about continuity. We will NEVER see continuity in Trek while they hold the reins. Don’t waste your emotional strength hoping for anything better: they have made their blatant disregard for us clear, we might as well just disengage our brains and enjoy seeing our favourite actors figthing aliens. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than nothing.

Let’s face it — Trek only continues because it’s Trek. Any other show with the Disaster Duo in charge would have been binned decades ago.

Edit: Anyway, Kirk did encounter the Borg – check out the amazing Star Trek: New Voyages at http://www.5yearmission.com. Some fans with a large budget and help from some of the Trek people are filming a fourth season of The Original Series, and in the first ep a Borg Pyramid attacks the Enterprise 1701.

Thanks for the link. This is one of the better fan films I’ve seen.
