  1. Not bad
It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t really care for the Carter/Replicator bits. Also, did it seem to anyone else that the special effects went downhill? My thoughts are that their budget was gutted a little to help out Atlantis.

Well the Special Effects supervisor they’ve had for the last many years left the show. Perhaps that played in.

  2. new Dr. Weir???!!
OK, why did they replace the actress who played Dr. Weir (who did a great job
in the finale) – with a brunette??

I’m not sure but I belive that they cast and filmed the season finale before Atlantis got the green light. The Seventh Season finale was also geared up to support a possible series finale. I don’t think that the actress they had was willing to commit to a series. From what I saw in an Atlantis preview they started building the sets and soundstages long before they even had the pilot script written. The cast was the last thing they had in place just days before shooting. In fact Rainbow Franks was cast the day before shooting started. But I could be full of it thats just what I have heard.

So they could just have used a different character for the role – it smells..

You’re right in that the season finale and Atlantis were filmed some time apart, but according to Jessica Steen’s (the first Dr. Weir) website it was a decision from higher up the food chain. Personally, I thought that Torri Higginson was better in the role and the only bright spot of the season premiere. Only time will tell if Atlantis works, of course, but so far I don’t have a problem with the change.

I hope that the new season of SG-1 gets better from here. The season premiere jumped around way too much without any rhythm or flow, the effects were on the weak side, and the Carter/Fifth bits were hackneyed at best. Not an auspicious beginning for a series that’s already long in the tooth.
