Comments Blaine: I’ve heard wonderful things about this movie, but I refuse to see it. It was cowritten and directed by Nate Parker, with the help of cowriter Jean Celestin. He developed it independently, and it was only after he lined up a distributor that people learned about a dark chapter in their past. For more details, see this story, and the court transcripts that have since become available. In short, Parker and Celestin were both accused of raping the same woman on the same night. Celestin was found guilty but that was overturned on appeal. Parker was acquitted because of his “past history” with the victim, as though agreeing to have sex with a man once is the same as giving him a lifetime free pass. I will never knowingly support any project involving either Parker or Celestin.
Alex: Likewise. I recommend watching Hidden Figures this month in features instead – not only does it showcase the previously unmentioned accomplishments of African Americans, but African-American women in the STEM fields no less.
