Way back when, Lucas claimed that Star Wars would eventually consist of a trilogy of trilogies. Then, for a long time, he denied that he would ever make the final trilogy, three episodes which take place after the original three.
According to this story, we might be seeing these after all.
Is this a good thing, or not?
Could be great!
If anyone but Lucas writes and directs them.
Flog that dying horse George …
Flog it ’til the original trilogy’s eight remaining fans leave the theater in disgust. :(
Rights?
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away a friend mentioned he’d read Lucas had sold either the (general?) rights to episodes 7+, or perhaps it was the merchandising rights to 7+… while I’ve seen nothing of the sort mentioned since the public learned Episode I was a reality, I always thought it would be a good enough reason for Lucas to never do anything past Episode VI… he wouldn’t make as much money.
good news
frankly, I think Lucas would be stupid not to continue the saga. If he can write the stories and just let Spielberg or someone else direct them they would probably turn out great.
I dunno why people have such a big problem with Ep. 1 & 2. It may be just that reality can’t live up to the glow of nostalgia. Regardless, the star wars movies aren’t anywhere near the worst of sci-fi and I’m interested in seeing the last 3.
Re: good news
That’s an interesting point. No, they may not be the “worst” in terms of writing or FX, but because the expectation was/is so high, they are a tremendous disappointment.
Someone once told me that Lucas will never win, because we all have our own ideas about how these movies should be. That said, I think he’s lost his focus and is more interested in merchandising than telling a grand story. For example, is there really need for 30 minutes of pod racing in Ep I (roughly 25% of the movie, with, I think, 2/3 of the deleted scenes also of pod racing)? Or a chase through metal smashers in Ep II? The whole time, I kept hitting the A button to jump!
I don’t know if its his writing, directing, or both that has stiffled the series, but something has to change.
And speaking of change, I’ll be boycotting the new new version of the “Original” Trilogy this September. I don’t care what kind of grand vision you might have in your head, you can’t rearrange something you’ve already given to the world. I won’t begrudge him wanting to fix his FX, but you can’t make Greedo shoot first, or Photoshop the new actors in in place of the old ones.
Re: good news
Seems to me the way to go, given what can be done on DVD, is to include alternate versions of scenes. That way, everyone could see the movie they want.
Re: good news
I’ve yet to find a good reason why they’re not doing this.
Re: good news
Uhm, Lucas is entirely within his right to recreate,
revise or destroy his ideas about the Star Wars
universe, being the creator. I think if you don’t see that,
you’re deluding yourslef into thinking that this belongs
to anyone else but him.
It doesn”t belong to the fans.
Star Wars is George Lucas’ vision. Period.
And with these final three episodes, we will finally get to
understand what that vision is / was / will be…
See if your boycott does any freaking good. Sounds like
stupidity to me.

Re: good news
Oh come on, lets face it. George is 61 and Spielberg is 58, assuming a 3 year production period for each I think they’ll both be hard pushed to finish the trilogy of trilogies. Why not let them retire to wallow in all their money.
Anyway, the way things are going they’ll not need actors for the 3rd trilogy, they’ll just do the whole thing in CG… :-|
Re: good news
Agreed!… so who would you have direct the last three?
Re: good news
Sam Raimi! I mean… come on… that one was obvious :}
I like the NEW style personally
i watched the new version of jedi about a week ago and it dawned on me that
I remember 4,5, and 6 MUCH more fondly than they actually are. While I
admit that much of the episode1 crap was just that … crap …. there seemed
to be a much more coherent and enjoyable storyline in episode II … i know
the episode 1 and 2 titles were crap … phantom clones? ….. although i do
aggree that han shot first …. but i would rather that the stories were redone
all together …. i know many fans will view that as sacralige …. but whatever
….. more movies in this universe can NOT be a bad thing …. and if they are
you can just ignore it like it never happened …. just like star trek nemesis
Re: I like the NEW style personally
I only actually have problems with two things on the ’97 versions. One, of course, is the Greedo shooting first thing, the other is Luke yelling as he falls in ESB, its a bit distracting.
All in all I can live with Hayden in the final shot of Jedi (I’ve actually wondered before why Vader shows up the age he died, but with jedi robes on, having never been an older jedi). The coolest I guess would have been a smiling older Anakin without the mask in the Vader outfit, but anyway.
If Han shoots first again I’m willing to forgive almost any change made to these movies.
&, 8 and 9 will be the greatest
Of course its a good thing. The best part of the story
has yet to be told. Remember Episode 6, and all of the
Emporer’s predictions about Luke replacing his father…
Could they have been true predictions? Is the Emporer
really dead? That’s the intuiging thing about the cloning
technology… Palapatine’s obviously used the cloning
technology for his own personal gain, as I believe will
become clear in Episode 3. but towards what end?
Even if Luca directs, this is the best part of the story,
and there are many many things that will become clear
with these last chapters, not only about the story, but
also in regards to Lucas’ secrecy and directing style.
Some things just had to be contolled to an extreme
degree in order to preserve the integrity of the entire
story. Who wants to bet that Anakin doesn’t find out who
his real father is in Episode 3? I’m betting that it
happens. I also believe that the revelations in Episode
3 will create a logical bridge to Episode 7, and that fans
will not only be dying to see it, but will also be
re-examining the original trilogy like never before (which
is pretty amazing, considering that theyve been combed
over already) Could there still be clues to uncover in
those films?
