For genre films it was (yet again) a quiet night:
- Arrival – Sound Editing
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – Costume Design
- The Jungle Book – Visual Effects
- Piper – Animated Short Film
- Suicide Squad – Makeup and Hairstyling
- Zootopia – Animated Feature Film
Which genre films did you think got what they deserved? Which were snubbed?
I’m disappointed Star Trek Beyond didn’t walk away with the Hair and Makeup award. It seemed like a no-brainer until I remembered what happened to Star Trek: Nemesis. Folks in the industry loved the film, but very few people in the general Academy voting pool saw it. I suspect the same thing happened here.
Agreed, Brian.
Also disappointed Kubo didn’t win for Animated, but I think I understand the message the industry was trying to send. Zootopia’s message of inclusion and recognition of bias is useful in our current situation, but I honestly think Kubo was just a better movie.
I haven’t seen Kubo (yet), so I can’t comment. But I did think that Zootopia was a fantastic film with a great message. But you’re not the only one I’ve heard say the same thing about that category.
