“Smallville” and “Lost” premier tonight

I’ll be reviewing “Smallville,” but probably not
until Thursday morning. (Tonight will be spent
watching and reviewing The Empire Strikes
Back
instead.)

  1. Info on “Lost”

It’s expected to be one of the better new shows (at least that’s what the critics are saying). Whether it can stand up against the ratings juggernaut Law & Order and newcomer (but sure to be a hit) CSI:NY is another matter.

It airs on ABC at 8/7c. Official Site.

I stumbled across Jack&Bobby on WB just in time to catch most of the premiere, and it’s very good. “told in flashback”, it’s really the story of two brothers growing up with their mother, a school teacher. They intersperse comments from people in “the present” (2049) reflecting back on the President (the younger of the two brothers). The gimmick isn’t too gimmicky, and the story and acting are extremely well done.

Even though it’s not genre, don’t forget that [ratings juggernaut] Law & Order tonight is also the debut of Dennis Farina, replacing Jerry Orbach after he managed the longest character run on the series (probably a contractual obligation after the too-short runs of George Dzundza and Paul Sorvino). Despite Elizabeth Rohm (who was on Angel before L&O, and I really dislike her on the latter), I still like the series but hardly care about watching the episodes first-run considering how often it’s on in syndication.

  2. Totally psyched
I can’t wait for tonight. What a great tv night. Smallville premiere, as well as the series premieres of Lost and CSI: NY. Too bad I’ll have to tape the latter half. But they both look fantastic. It would help me if Lost was on at 9pm though. So I could watch all three back to back. Taping will work though.

I only sporadically catch Smallville, but the premiere sounds like it’s taking the show in a somewhat different direction. We get it on City-TV here, so unfortunately, it won’t premiere until next Tuesday, which means any discussion will be out of date for me.

  3. Lost
it wasn’t too bad, but nothing special either.

I watched it because of it’s association with JJ Abrams. It was a slow first episode as they try to acquaint you with the cast and the story. I will be watching again next week to see if it picks up any steam.

It was a slow first episode…

Slooww!? I’ve had to reset my Tivo to grab the next episode in “best” quality because the pixelation was so bad.

People getting killed left and right, plane parts flying, explosions, and a mysterious “thing in the jungle” that rips the flesh off of people – how much more can they pack into an hour?

I was immediately hooked, and can’t wait for the next episode.. Of course, it’s got a real suck possibility depending on what they do with that thing in the jungle, but I’m happy to wait and find out.

The action happened pretty much all in the first few minutes… and then slow… and then some mystery toward the end.
