The new show premiered last night. What did you think?

Only saw the beginning, but…
I’m so glad I taped this last night (had to watch Smallville live). I watched the first 5 minutes of Lost, and was totally blown away! I can’t wait to watch the whole thing. That and the pilot of CSI: NY that I taped too. This is going to be a great year for TV!

I was enthralled from the first five minutes, too. Several people I knew didn’t, and talked about the engine thing, or the crash thing, etc… not being “realistic. or the bear – most of this is setting up the story for the rest of the seasons and we got plausable hints as to all of it.
So, the engine thing…. bugged me until I checked with people who WORK in the industry and at Boeing. Guess what; it is possible. The engine would burnout and slow down, and it WAS slowing down… and the fuel lines were all correctly placed, apparently. I have the episodes on VHS and VCD, so I did a bit more digging – the fuel spurts were from the wing lines. Just have to watch it a few times considering the plane is so awkwarly skewed.
Now, assuming there isn’t a supernatural event that accompanied the intial hit and breaking apart, even the air pocket thing can be explained away. No air, you drop like a rock. I’m not a physics kind of guy, but someone who is should do the math and explain under what conditions that plane would have to encounter to go as it did.
I never scoff anymore, because after you do the research, you just might be in for a surprise. Knowledge beats ignorance, hands down.
Oh, yeah…if you want to protect you property, use a Polar Bear. They can eat anything, run almost any mammal down, and generally don’t care about your raqce or creed. It’s all food to them. Give them wings and they’re a real threat. :>

I know the show has to survive a hostile market where shows often only have a few episodes to prove themselves, but I felt the show moved too fast in introducing “the bear” so early. Let the first few episodes focus on the survivors with subtle foreshadowing of “the bear”. That will build up tension far better than conveniently ripping the pilot out of his seat shortly after our heroes arrive.
I also had a few nits on the first 10 minutes. The engine would not still be running – and would be deafening if it were, there’s no fuel in the tail section (or that’s the world’s smallest wing for a large commercial jet), and for God’s sake if you’re trying to remove somebody from under a heavy object in loose sand you dig out the sand from under him instead of trying to lift the object! Mr. Expert should have know that.

Yeah, that engine running without any pumps feeding non-existant fuel to it bugged me a lot too, and I don’t think there would be near that many survivors, if any. And if the front of the airplane fell off, it would *not* be in front of the rest of the plane — it would be in the ocean somewhere.
Nevertheless, despite the total unbelievability of the premise, I liked the show. I’m amused that people in the other thread talking about this think it’s slow and people here think it’s too fast. I’m kinda in the slow camp myself, but it gives them time to actually develop a story and the characters, and it wasn’t so slow that I was bored by any means. They did suspense very well… Though, me? If there’s something big and hungry out there, I’m finding the darkest corner of that plane and hunkering down, not trying to out run something very likely to be a heck of a lot faster than me.

One of those passenger people commented that they didn’t know which direction they were flying when they crashed. It could be that the plane went over the island, dropped the nose in the middle, and then crashed on the far side.
Wait – That’s it! They crashed on The Far Side. I want to go on record now speculating that the mysterious Monster is a cow, or possibly a large older woman wearing horn-rimmed glasses.

would it explode like that’ genre, but you gotta entertain the people that
don’t know how stuff works I guess.

Blair Witch Project meets Survivor. Seems silly and impossible to sustain tension. Jerky camera action will never take the place of character development. I got a bad feeling about this one, and not just from “the bear”.

I still hold to the “slow” comment from the other thread… I wasn’t bored, and in fact I make allowances for shows and episodes that are introducing people…. But it was slow at times.
I too was annoyed by the engine thing, but not as much as the shaky hand-cam in the front section of the plane… made me wanna smack the director.
It also obviously picked out at least 3 of the regular characters, once they get things fleshed out it should be interesting. They’ve introduced enough different problems to surmount that they could keep the excitement going for quite awhile without having to bring in another large animal.
The mentioned problems didn’t bother me
What bothered most of you didn’t bother me at all. The engine still running added a lot in the beginning. People freaking out about the crash, bodies everywhere, wreckage burning, and this huge (and very dangerous) engine wailing still. It just created a very creepy atmosphere. It’s certainly not realistic, but whatever the creature is probably won’t be either. I guess “the bear” that you all keep mentioning is just code for “the creature” since we really don’t yet.
But when I first saw the commercials for the show, the first thing I thought was “Land of the Lost”. So that’s my guess for the creature(s).

Finally got around to watching it.
I finally got a chance to watch it last night and I must say I’m intrigued.
I do like the way they started it post crash. For some reason I swear I saw
the previews with the plane falling apart (a la Alive) so that must be
flashbacks later in the series.
Has some great promise. I stopped TiVoing That 70s Show for this one
(primary TiVo has Smallville, that isn’t changing for nothing) and I’m looking
forward to seeing how this develops.
The pilot sticking his head out the window was rather cliche though, but oh
well.
