  1. rental
That movie is definatly a “maybe a rental”, if the better stuff is out…
Rottentomatoes has it at 33% right now.

At first I was excited about it, then one of the quotes was ‘with an urban spin’
or something like that and I clicked away.

Though the reggae jellifishes could have potential

  2. Another Pixar Mimic Film
Shark Tale is yet another entry in the list of Dreamworks’ mimicry of the vastly superior Pixar projects. I’m not sure why DW keeps doing this, but they fail time and again. Antz couldn’t hold a candle to A Bug’s Life, and ABL is the least successful Pixar film to date. ST isn’t going to have anything like the cred or following of Finding Nemo. The only DW film that came close to being a better film was Shrek vs. Monster’s Inc.* (not exactly the same battlefront, but similar – big, friendly monster with affable sidekick in a story told from a different point of view). But DW keeps doing the same thing: a superficialy similar milieu with worse production standards, focus-group-tested story by committee and an all-star cast. But no matter how many Eddie Murphys, Robert DeNiros or Sylvester Stallones they get to do the readings, Pixar’s better story-telling with A- actors (not B actors, but not A actors, per se) keeps trouncing them.

F&%^ the Academy for giving the Shrek the Oscar over MI, Sully’s fur alone made Monster’s Inc. a better film visually, and MI’s story wasn’t an adaptation. As to Shrek 2, I have no idea how that got to #3 on the all-time Box Office. Same way Home Alone made it in to the top 10 for a while, I expect.

Pixar is the innovator. Dreamworks is just a sad immitator. I might rent it because Will Smith is fun to watch, probably even as a fish.

Look for a superhero story from DW next year.

    * MI was, yes, released later than Shrek, but was announced earlier.
