The SciFi franchise everyone loves to hate is back. Season Three ended with one of the biggest WTF moments in TV history, so I imagine a lot of people will still tune in, if only out of morbid curiousity.
Season Four is only signed for a half-season, UPN will pay for more episodes if, and only if, the ratings improve. The biggest change for the better: Manny Coto is now the lead Executive Producer, leaving the wonder twins of Braga and Berman to dream up other, bigger ways to screw up Trek.
Love to Hate?
Why would one hate it? is it the same feeling that arises with the latest Star War Movies? It is easy to put down something when you have history, but in reality these episodes of Star Trek are as good as any sci fi shows. Standing alone, they work hard to entertain. I think Mr. Bacula is a great actor and does a wondeful job. Yes, I too am excited over the new direction but that is true for any series in sci fi. Growth is positive! I look forward to the show and encourage others to open their minds and enjoy it too. Being critics only diminishes the number of sci fi shows on TV. Can we live on five days of law and order every week? I pray not! argh! Good Fortunes to Enterprise – May she sail the cosmic seas for years to come!

There is the problem in a nutshell. Enterprise is NOT a standalone project, it is NOT a whimsical new idea. Enterprise IS part of a 40 year old story with 4 other series, hundreds of books and quite a few movies that have preceeded it. That’s a lot of history and fan devotion that B&B completely pissed on when they developed Enterprise. If they had tried, just a little, to stretch out within the scope of the Star Trek continuity without having to resort to time traveling Deus ex Machina storylines they could have created a nice little addition to Trek, instead they bent it over and sodomized it.
From encounters with the Ferengi to neurotic Vulcan pin-ups rubbing themselves down with decon-sex-gel to the most whiney officer I’ve ever seen (Tripp), B&B have created a boxed in train wreck of a series. Other than the Andorians I can’t say that there’s anything worth watching on this series.
They could have done a whole season on just the Andorian/Vulcan conflicts. They could have done a season (or three) on the Human/Klingon war and maybe finally explained why the original series Klingons look different from every other Klingon ever seen. Coulda shoulda woulda.

Though I really liked Odyssey 5’s plot lines and Im’ glad Showtime started showing the last few episodes, I’m hoping for potential after he cleans up the cock up of a cliffhanger. God how lame was that. To this day I’m glad I missed my TV with the brick I threw when that happened.

Daniels mentioned that if they succeed, then the whole temporal war would never have happened. Seems like a good way to undo all the mess B&B have made. A retcon to retcon previous retcons. If I remember correctly, the WW2 arc is only going to last a couple more episodes. I’d stick around at least until then.

I’m going with the U2 method: 2 crappy albums back to back, and they retire – so two bad episodes, and I’m gone as a fan. I’ll get my Star Trek fix off of my ST:TNG Boxsets and The Wrath Of Khan.

What would be neat….
If when they returned to their timeline everyone was wearing the original 60’s style uniforms. We saw Klingons who looked like Mongolians. Romulans who looked exactly like Vulcans. You know, back to the roots of ST:TOS .
The story line involving the Eugenics looks interesting. Hope they can pull it off. Would be nice to see if the Andorrans establish some sort of relationship with Earth.

Worf’s “we don’t discuss it with outsiders” line aside, I accept Roddenberry’s notion that the Klingon foreheads are just an improved effect. Visual discrepancies don’t bother me so much as B&B’s disregard for the historical continuity of the show and their preference for poor scripts.
A complete revision of the context Enterprise established over three seasons would be rather like Bobby Ewing in the shower or Spidey’s Clone Saga– a heavy-handed attempt that would likely backfire. I doubt they’ll do it. It’s more likely that we’ll just see minor tweaks to history. In comic terms, I suspect this will be a Zero Hour rather than a Crisis on Infinite Earths.
However, given the disappointment that Enterprise has been, I hope they do use this alternative history arc to reboot the series. Flaw #37 of this series has been the use of time-travel as a cheap gimmick, rather than a purposeful plot device. A significant change to the timeline would justify the use of time travel, and give Enterprise a second chance.

Why is it, somewhere I remember hearning that the explination was that the Klingons who Kirk met there weren’t full blooded klingons…

Except that Kirk’s key Klingon adversaries show up in DS9 with the tortoiseshell foreheads. I first heard of the “not full blooded” explanation in a non-canonical book called Aliens of the Federation, but it’s likely as old as the first film. If you surf the ‘Net, you’ll find many explanations. Heck, you’ll find entire sites dedicated to answering the question. None of these explanations, however, are canonical.

All that extra head could just be protective bone and tissue. The idea of his passing for human is significantly less absurd than any number of things accepted by Trek fans: human/alien crossbreeds, duplicate earths, dodgable rayguns, and (for some fans) an Enterprise era with a level of technology nearly indistinguishable from TOS-era stuff.

new story arc
According to Statrek.com the current time travel
disaster will end next episode. There will then
be a story about Enterprise’s return to earth.
Finally!! I guess the ships gets a major refit!
Then….there will be a 3 episode story arc which
will be based on the TOS episode “space seed”
and the movie STII, “the rath of Kahn”.
This arc seems to take place between the ugenics war
and Kirk’s discovery of the USS Botny Bay.
……My stomach’s churning already…..
