Comments Blaine: Includes a 52 episode adaptation of multiple Oz novels. I enjoyed it in its first run, but I was also 9 at the time, so I don’t know how well it will hold up. Margot Kidder narrates. Alex: This series was originally animated by Studio Panmedia for the NHK (Japanese Public Broadcasting), likely for NHK’s “World Masterpiece Theater” block. When the work was released in the US and Canada, the credits were adjusted to remove any mention of its Japanese origins, including the names of the animators and directors. One of the animation directors on the show was Yôichi Kotabe – who had previously been an Animation Director on “Sally the Witch Girl” – the first Magical Girl anime, and has gone on to be an Animation Supervisor for the entirety of the Pokemon Franchise, up until 2017’s Pokemon Sun & Moon anime. This release only contains the English Language dub. I can’t say if this version contains the original score, which was by Joe Hisashi, who is known for his work scoring Hayao Miyazaki’s films, along with Genesis Climber Mospeda.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Ronin is one of John Frankenheimer’s best films, and features one of the best car chases of all time – and this is an Arrow release, and they tend to bring a Criterion Collection level of quality to their releases.” Blaine says, “If you buy things digitally, grab Wonder Woman. If you prefer physical media, grab To Catch a Thief.”

  1. I was a Marine guard at the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan and on duty when DeNiro and his team came to speak with the Ambassador and his staff about possible assistance in using Pakistan a filming location for Ronin. I think they spent about 3 days in country, though obviously they went with another country for the actual filming.
