Comments | Blaine: This really entertained me when I first saw it, but that was before I’d seen the TV series or heard the radio show. I understand the criticisms of this, since they essentailly turned a detective character into James Bond. To check out a more faithful adaptation, you can listen to radio plays starring Vincent Price as Simon Templar over at Archive.org. | ||||||||

Finally, the picks of the week. Blaine says, “I have to go with The Greatest American Hero. It’s first two seasons were generally very good, and some of the satire elements were brilliant. Also, we both know the theme song has been running through your head since you read the name of the show.” Alex says, “I really like the Crusher Joe OVAs.
The funny thing is I just watched Escape From LA for some reason.
If you haven’t watched The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, it’s a pretty good movie. And I made a 5-second summary of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOBwfBzH5G8 (can we do links on this thing?)
Yeah, not the greatest of them all, maybe, but Liberty Valance is good, as old westerns go.
Waiting for Guffman: it’s the community theatre version of Spinal Tap, and pretty funny.
I’d recommend The Talented Mr. Ripley, but it won’t appeal to everyone.
I’ve never watched the movie of Catch-22. I cannot imagine an adaptation of that book working. Anyone?
And, if you don’t already know, the Sgt Pepper movie has little to do with the Beatles; it’s a bizarre and really quite bad musical from the late 70s. A couple of the song covers are okay, and I suppose for some viewers it falls under “has to be seen to be believed.”
I’ve watched Catch 22. No, not a fantastic adaptation but really (as you say) how could it be? Then again, it does star Alan Arkin.
I think the movie works better if you’ve tried to read the book, couldn’t hack it because you’re 16, and 5 years later went “Hey there’s a movie? Let’s give that a shot!” and then another 5 years later and you go “Hey I should try that book again. Hey this is pretty good.”
Random example.
I’d grown up with the song The man who shot Liberty Valance and it was only a couple of years ago that I finally saw the movie. While John Wayne and James Stewart were often given one dimensional characters, as was the norm of the time, this was one of the better character based westerns of the era.
I haven’t drank my coffee yet, and my first glance at this swapped the first two letters of the last two words:
This is a decent week for complete 1980s TV sex bots.
For a moment, I was thinking there were some very different offerings in this weeks list. Or at least a lot more anime.
> 1980s TV sex bots.
I really hope you don’t mean VICI.
I tried to come up with any sort of witty response, but the idea was too disturbing to think much further about.
I haven’t seen Small Wonder since it was on the air, and I think my brain combined it with Out of This World.
Blaine: Thanks for the suggestion, I loved The Saint, so the idea of listening to an original with Vincent Price (Inspiration for Doctor Strange) sounds great! Once Dimension X is done, you should post those. :)
Spider-Man is out! Yeah!!!
Adam Graham already did that, and did it very well, as part of the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio.

Man I wish Sahara was a better movie. Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt was some fantastic casting.
