DC Television Week 16 Discussion

The Date Convention I have been using isn’t that accurate as it was when there only four shows and were starting at the same time.  This week, we get to see Lucifer act as a groupie for a superstar, The Legends visit one of the first big superstars, The Flash swaps out with Iris so she can be super, Black Lightning deals with his family and their super powers, and we get a preview of the new super show Krypton.  (Arrow and Supergirl are still taking a break from being super.)

[All synopses (and titles) from Trakt.tv below the cut.  (If a show’s synopsis is a spoiler to you, do not click More…)]

Lucifer – S03E17 – Let Pinhead Sing! – When a superstar singer’s life is threatened, the team is thrust into the world of big-ticket stadium shows, crazed fans and divas, giving Lucifer a run for his money. Meanwhile, Charlotte tries to help Linda and Maze repair their friendship.

Supergirl – S03E14 – Schott Through the Heart – Returning on April 16, 2018.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – S03E14 – Amazing Grace – When the Legends learn that a mysterious tragedy destroyed Memphis in 1954, thus eradicating the birthplace of rock and roll, they embark on their most important mission – to save music. Nate is excited to show Amaya why music is important to him and he is surprised it leads to a rock legend as well as the sixth and final totem, the Death Totem. Meanwhile, Zari helps their newest member try to adjust to the team.

The Flash – S04E16 – Run, Iris, Run – Team Flash confront a new bus meta, Matthew aka Melting Pot. He has the ability to swap people’s DNA, so during a battle with Team Flash, he transfers Barry’s super speed to Iris. Now, with a new threat unleashed on Central City, Barry must act as the team leader while Iris takes on the mantle of superhero speedster in order to defeat their new foe.

Black Lightning – S01E08 – Revelations – Black Lightning works with Anissa to help find information to clear Black Lightning’s name. Jennifer begins interning for Lynn. Meanwhile, Gambi finds himself in a precarious situation.

Arrow – S06E16 – The Thanatos Guild – (Airing March 29, 2018) – Nyssa Al Ghul returns to Star City to warn Thea that a group of renegade League of Assassins members are planning to attack her. This group, led by Athena, is intent on finding a mysterious box that Malcolm left behind and will stop at nothing to get it. Nyssa helps Oliver come to a life-changing realization.

Krypton – S01E00 – Krypton: The Making of a Legend – No synopsis, but there was another DC show starting on Syfy.

  1. Lucifer was fun, and I have to give the story writers credit for not being too dumb.

…which I couldn’t say for the rest of the shows. Legends is dumb and unbelievable, but less than previous weeks. The Flash, on the other hand, actually had me tell my wife not to ask me how something was supposed to work because if I thought about it then everything on the show for the entire episode was going to crumble like a cheap biscotti.

    • The producers *really* need to hire someone who understands what the science and technology jargon means. I mean, I can accept a certain level of “out there” science in a situation that driven by magic. But, seriously, when you use a science or technology word, make sure you use the right one. (I can’t remember which word(s) it was this week, but the past few weeks I’ve had at least one major twitch moment when they used a word completely incorrectly or used the completely wrong word. Cue Inigo Montoya’s remarks to Vizzini.)

Note that I’m not referring to things like the magical internet in Star City, which was cringe-worthy but at least it served a plot purpose. No, I’m referring to people like Ray or Harry who should know proper physics type terminology. Or Caitlin who should have biology and medical terminology right. And most of them should demonstrate some level of education instead of coming across as uneducated hicks, even outside of their specific fields, given who they associate with. (I’m giving Mick a pass here because he’s deliberately acting dumb.)

  2. I haven’t been watching these shows, and Legends has always played fast and loose with history, but the notion that rock ‘n’ roll wouldn’t have spread if Memphis was destroyed in 1954? I’m reminded of the one Freakazoid ep I saw, wherein World War II never happens because the Japanese don’t invade Pearl Harbor.

    • If there is a credible popular belief that Rock and Roll was “Devil Music” and the dead rising up and destroying a town that listened to it, I think that might set it back a bit.

That said, I agree with your basic premise. Legends is as believable as Sabrina The Teenage Witch when it comes to how reality works.

      • This is why comments by people who haven’t watched the specific ep are always problematic. The dead rising up might be a cultural moment of some significance.
