Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “Ninja III: The Domination is a really dumb movie, but there are a lot of bits about it that makes it really fun to love.” Blaine says, “if you don’t own Columbo already, now is the time.”
Boy the new Tomb Rider was kinda bad. But it wasn’t Alicia Vikander’s fault – she was a lot more believable as an action hero than Angelina Jolie.
I’ve said for a while now that the problem with translating video games into movies is that you lose the first-person narrative. That is, rather than you controlling the action and the narrative (with many modern games offering branching narratives) you’re just watching, and that’s a completely different experience.
I still stand by that, but watching this one made me see another huge problem.
A lot of the video game stuff has to be shoe-horned into these things. And a lot of that makes zero sense in a movie setting. As a small example, the kind of beat-downs Lara Croft constantly takes in this movie would leave Captain America in a bloody pulp. The whole “wait to heal” thing from the video game doesn’t work in a movie.
That sort of talk is why I skipped Tomb Raider. (Unless you really meant Tomb Rider, which is probably a different version not suitable for children.)
I did watch 2036 Unknown Origin, which wasn’t bad. It wasn’t the sort of thing I’d send everyone running to see, but it certainly was worth the 94 minutes we invested in it. I mention it because I find very, very little talk about it on the web and thought it deserved more than that.
I’d probably watch Tomb Rider (;
I skipped Tomb Raider until it was free. And it pretty much lived up to my expectations.
I still haven’t seen Darkest Hour, I doubt I’ll see the new Tomb Raider, and I already own Coraline and American Graffiti. See American Graffiti if you already haven’t, and check out the sequel, which is better than its reputation, in part because it doesn’t just try to imitate the original. Without AG‘s runaway success, we likely wouldn’t have had Star Wars.
I am curious about a few relics of the 60s I haven’t seen, Curious Yellow / Blue and Jack the Giant Killer, but I suspect they really require viewing in context.
Also: see Orange is the New Black if you haven’t. It’s not a family show, but it is one of my favorite genre series right now.

Is this woman’s prison on Mars or something? I missed that this show was in our genre.
Hey, everything’s some genre.
However, in the context of this site, I meant to type, “non-genre.”
Still, your Martian Women’s Prison series idea has potential.

You can watch Starcrash for a Space Prison scene. But I highly recommend against it.
