  • Season 1, Part 1 Blu-Ray/DVD: US
Comments Kind of a deconstruction of “Reincarnated In Another World” anime – the main character dies on the streets of Tokyo, is reincarnated in another world, when they are killed there they “reset” at the last “checkpoint” they pass. The Limited Edition release comes in a chipboard box with a specialty print, an artbook, and a *regular* pillowcase.

Spirit of the Sun

  • Blu-Ray: US
Comments SF anime set in a future where a geological disaster has rendered Japan uninhabitable, and much of the population has relocated to Taiwan.
Tender Comrade (1943)
Amazon
  • MOD DVD: US
Under Capricorn
Amazon
  • Blu-Ray: US, CAN
Comments Note that the Blu-Ray comes out this week, but the DVD release of this Hitchcock film came out last week.

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “this Doctor Who set has two of my favorite Tom Baker Stories, making this something of a must-buy (though I don’t know how much they’ll gain from Blu-Ray, as the two in question are almost entirely in the studio).” Blaine says, “I’m also going with this Doctor Who set, although I also question if it’s worth upgrading from DVDs if you already have them. They were shot on film in this era, so it could make a difference, but given the budgets involved, that may not be a good thing. Note that I haven’t seen Under Capricorn yet, but like all Hitchcock, it’s on my ‘must see’ list.”

    • Some years ago, I introduced my wife, who is a fan of the twenty-first century Doctor Who, to some of the older incarnations she missed. It was my first viewing of them since I was a teen. The better stories hold up fairly well, but, yeah, hi-def they do not need.

That American Experience (a great doc series) ep on the Chinese Exclusion Act makes for excellent viewing, but I don’t know that I’d want to own it.

  1. I would pay good money for a Batman Beyond movie (if handled by Paul Dini and company – but then ALL of DC movies should be handled by that team).

Cautiously optimistic about Pacific Rim: Uprising
