Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I’ve been watching New Game! with my dad, and we’ve since moved on to Season 2, and he’s really been getting a kick out of it – enough so that I feel comfortable making the show my recommendation for the week. That said, Won’t You Be My Neighbor and Deep Red (two films that couldn’t be any more different) are way up there on my watchlist (though for different reasons).” Blaine says, “of the titles I’ve seen, Animaniacs is at the top of the list. Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is very near the top of my must-see list, though.”

  1. Animaniacs and Pink & The Brain are always good picks.

I caught Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom late in its theatrical run and thoroughly enjoyed it. It actually felt like a Spielberg movie of old. Plus, the writers clearly read the original book and really understood Crichton’s message about genetic engineering being the next great weapon.

      • I think most people have forgotten how silly and fun older movies were. For example, I watched Crystal Skull after marathoning the first three Indy films. It’s really not that much worse than Temple of Doom. The problem is that people give those old movies a nostalgia pass while expecting so much more from newer films. Plus there’s the schadenfreude/mass bitching that the Internet is in wanting to destroy geek things (the “it raped my childhood” crowd).

        • I would agree about Crystal Skull— but only because I saw Temple of Doom in a theatre in ’84 and left with the clear feeling the film had wasted my time and the original movie’s sequel-anticipation capital. And this is someone who saw the original Raiders with a high school gf whom, I soon discovered, had an intense fear of snakes.
