      This commentary says it all.

Tycho of Penny-Arcade has a “I was there” commentary that pretty much agrees with that, except for the musical tastes.

I don’t really understand why people watch awards show, they’re always boring, and why they give any sort of credit to sponsored hype like that. I tend to interpret “best game/movie/whatever” as “the one that gave us the best bribe”, then again, I’m quite cynical.
I gave up on the Oscars when Braveheart beat Frankenstein for best makeup. No freakkin’ way man.

BEST FIGHTING GAME Mortal Kombat: Deception That can’t be true.

That’s the least of the problems. In a year with Metroid Prime 2, Halo 2, and Halo 2: GTA: San Andreas won game of the year?

  1. It was about video games???
From the small bit that I watched, Snoop Dog and Pharrel did a music set, then there was some annoying D.J. announcer. The audience had a few supermodel-ish girls in it.

I figured it was a crappy music awards show. Guess it was just a crappy video game awards show.

The CSI:Dark Motives machinima commercial breaks were a bright spot in the rest of the drek though.

  2. Not again
I saw the award show last year and was not fooled to watch it again this year. I wish TechTV would do a good one. XPlay makes an attempt but not quite an “awards show”.

  3. Another G4-ish production
Saw last years and didn’t bother this time. What was the best War Gaming sim? Flight sim? RTS ???? Hmmm, seems they are for the brainier type who don’t need to develop button mashing skills to master a game.

Tycho says “I think that the process started by Sony’s Playstation is now one hundred percent complete. I think that what has happened is that we are no longer relevant. Gaming culture has been seized, reconfigured, and commodified and programs like this are just the taut skin over a pulsing boil.”
