Comic Television Discussion – Week beginning 28th October 2018

Halloween has happened, which was why I was delayed with this post, but it doesn’t seem to have affected the comic based television as much as you would expect, except that Sabrina was released.  Supergirl teases her cousin, Arrow keeps working without Arrow, the Legends lean into the magical side of things, The Flash explores what it means to be meta, Black Lightning’s situation continues to degrade, the Titans visit even more DC properties, while the Gifted introduce romances.  Riverdale takes the week off to Enjoy catching up on Sabrina’s new show.

[All synopses (and titles) from Trakt.tv below the cut.  (If a show’s synopsis is a spoiler to you, do not click More…)]

Supergirl – S04E03 – Man of Steel – Ben Lockwood didn’t always hate aliens. Through a series of incidents and input from his anti-alien father, Ben slowly transforms from a mild-mannered professor into the villainous Agent Liberty of today.

Arrow – S07E03 – Crossing Lines – Still in prison, Oliver faces his biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, Felicity gets an intriguing offer, and Diggle asks Curtis to go undercover for ARGUS.

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – S04E02 – Witch Hunt – When the magical Time Seismograph goes off, the team finds themselves headed to the Salem witch trials. Sara notices that Zari is taking this case personally when she promises to save a mom, who is being accused of being a witch. However, the team quickly learns that there is a magical creature in the town creating problems they hadn’t been expecting. Meanwhile, Nate and Ava work together to try to keep their Time Bureau funding by proving to them that magic exists.

The Flash – S05E04 – News Flash – Barry and Iris face the ultimate parenting test when Team Flash battles Spin, a savvy millennial armed with meta tech, and a dangerous agenda for their daughter, Nora. Ralph is feeling defeated until an unlikely source issues a challenge to help boost his confidence.

Black Lightning – S02E04 – The Book of Consequences: Chapter Four: Translucent Freak – Jefferson confronts Anissa about her reckless and irresponsible behavior leading to a fierce disagreement.

Titans – S01E04 Doom Patrol – Now aware of Rachel’s power, Dick and Kory unite to find her. Escaped from the convent that sought to imprison her, Rachel puts her trust in Gar who reveals his own transformative powers. Seeking refuge, Gar brings Rachel home to his “family” – a group of misfit medical experiments we will come to know as The Doom Patrol (including Cliff Steele aka Robotman, Larry Trainor aka Negative Man and Rita Farr aka Elastiwoman) – in hopes of helping the girl. But what starts as a place of comfort for Rachel, soon turns dark under the scientific curiosity of The Doom Patrol’s leader Dr. Niles Caulder, whose experiment into Rachel’s powers threatens to set free a darkness, and reveal a new level of evil waiting to escape.

The Gifted – S02E05 – afterMath – As Caitlin and Thunderbird struggle to save the life of a mutant injured in the Inner Circle’s chaotic liberation of a psychiatric hospital, they discover clues to the identity of the powerful mutant Polaris and Andy were sent to retrieve. Meanwhile, as Jace joins up with the Purifiers to chase down the escaped mutants, he comes dangerously close to colliding once again with the Mutant Underground. (Review soon, keep refreshing!)

Riverdale – S03E04 – Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Midnight Club – When Betty confronts Alice about Gryphons and Gargoyles, Alice has no choice but to come clean about how she, along with a young Fred, FP, Hermoine, Hiram, Sierra, Penelope and Tom, played the game in the early 90’s – and how a shocking mystery has been plaguing them all ever since. (Next week: November 7th, 2018)

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina – S01 – (10 episodes) – Reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. Tonally in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist, this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature – half-witch, half-mortal – while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

  1. You know, this year’s Wells was just a trifle less annoying by the end of the episode. It’s also nice that Ralph got to do something useful with his actual skills. He’s still annoying, but, then, he’s a Wells. They’re all annoying when they first show up.

    • Agreed. Ralph was much improved this episode, and Wells… I love watching the actor have fun, but he hasn’t really gotten the perfect character to play yet, has he?
