Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I missed the theatrical release of Suspiria because the it wasn’t in theaters for very long in my area, so now that it’s on Blu-Ray, I’m definitely going to be picking it up. Otherwise, of the films I’ve seen, I definitely would recommend picking up All That Jazz. On the anime front, I’d recommend picking up Night is Short, Walk on Girl if you want a shorter movie, or Girl’s Last Tour if you’re looking for a series.” Blaine says, “of the titles I’ve seen, Jodie Whittaker’s first few episodes of Doctor Who win hands down. Of those I haven’t seen, I’ve heard wonderful things about In the Heat of the Night, and you can’t go wrong with Criterion Collection releases.”

  1. Boy Erased is apparently the male and harder-edged version of The Miseducation of Cameron Post (both YAesque novel and movie are excellent).

Ecco and The Forbidden (and, of course, the notorious Mondo films, two of which appear in this week’s list): brings to mind another life when you could head down to Suspect Culture in Toronto and rent the most bizarre films in existence. That somehow felt different than searching them out with a keyboard.

Of course, the film that started it all, Mondo Cane (1962), seems remarkably tame now. The more shocking scenes now are the brief shots of animal cruelty, and the dubious (and often racist) contextualizing of some of the footage.

  2. Humans is (was?) a really good TV show. If you’ve not watched it, I highly recommend it.

I bet Tarzan Goes To India is a lovely, racially-sensitive movie…
