These are selections from the January 11 release
list.
First, the genre releases:
- Hercules:
The
Legendary Journey Season Five: The series Kevin
Sorbo left to make
Andromeda. It’s a nine DVD set. - The
Village: M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie also
seems to be the
least well received.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- Classic
Cartoon Favorites – Starring Chip ‘n’ Dale: This
is a collection
of nine of the Chip ‘n’ Dale shorts Disney produced,
some of which
aren’t yet available on DVD. There are Goofy,
Donald,
and Mickey
Mouse collections, too, but they’re contents are
already available
in the Walt Disney Treasures. - Gilligan’s
Island – Season Two: Now in colour! The series
originally ran for
three seasons, so this will be another significant
portion of the show. - Leon
– The
Professional (Deluxe Edition): A Luc Besson
special edition
this week. - Love
Potion
#9: A decent little romantic comedy. - MI-5
Volume
2: Another five disc set for this well reviewed
series. - Monk
– Season
Two: Tony Shaloub is doing a great job on this
series.
Finally, the pick of the week. Luc Besson’s The
Fifth Element
gets the Ultimate Edition treatment. Timeshredder
recently reviewed
this movie, so
I’ll let that column expound its merits.
The Village?
The trailers had be highly anticipating this one. Some spoilers..
While watching it with my wife, fairly quickly into it I mentioned to her that it’d be funny if it was actually in modern times. The only evidence we had that it was the past was the headstone, which is completely circumstantial. So needless to say I was laughing myself silly when the end happened. M. Night’s cameo was completely poinless though, and he needs to learn to act, simply saying something slowly doesn’t make it good.
One question – was the leading actress (the blind girl, forget her name) the same person who played Mal’s wife in Firefly?
Damien
Re: The Village?
No…the blind girl was played by Bryce Dallas Howard (Ron Howard’s daughter, thats how I remember her name) and YoSafBridge was played by Christina Hendricks.

Re: The Village?
Sorry for missing that little checkbox, hope I didn’t spoil anything for anyone.
Luc Besson
Nice to see Luc Besson’s work getting some better releases than the ones I have now.
Re: Luc Besson
And yet, the French track isn’t included. There’s has got to be a lawyer to blame about this somewhere…
I hate region coding.
Re: Luc Besson
Strange that. Of course, both of these were made for the US market, so I am less upset about that than I am about the poor subtitle translation on the DVD of La Femme Nikita. The VHS version got the translation better.
Re: Luc Besson
Definitely – this is the uncut international version too, which was released on DVD in region 1 but is insanely hard to find. It’s got about 13 extra minutes that expand on the Leon-Mathilda relationship, and makes the movie, IMHO, much better than the original North American cut (plus the scenes of Mathilda helping him ‘clean’ are really cool).
