Star Trek XI Shelved?

Various online rumors abound, but Trek Today seems to have it all consolidated in one place. The rumors state that Paramount is unhappy with the direction the story is going and want it reworked. Meanwhile most fans don’t seem interested in the film at all…

I guess, if it keeps the wonder twins away from Enterprise, we can’t really complain. The show returns Friday, January 14th.

  1. Well well
STX: The Dumbing Of Data felt like it was written as a montage of focus group opinions. It included Troi and Riker lovin’, Troi being mind-raped, again, a car-chase scene (since when does Starfleet uses wheels???), and space-vampires.

Because, nothing says “quality sci-fi” like space vampires!

Speaking as someone who went to ST conventions, I couldn’t care less about STXI. I’d probably rent it at some point, of course, but I really don’t care if they don’t go ahead and make it: it’s not gonna be good. Not with Berman involved. He makes things suck.

Space nosferatus… for the love of god! How come no one stopped it? Come on! I need a drink…

      • Re: Well well

You sure you’re talking about ST:X? I don’t remember any vampires.

        Neither do I.

If ST:XI is cancelled now that may not be a bad thing… they need to do something quite different to ST:X to win my loyalty enough to buy the DVD and not slate the film everywhere I go.

Berman has been threatning to make it a *shudders* prequel!

          Technically, that’s different from STX : (

I meant something good that was different. There are plenty of things that would be different that would be awful. Star Trek XI: The Musical anybody?

Well, Brent Spiner used to work on Broadway before his back injury…

I’m sure Worf’s “Klingon Opera’ number would be… memorable ;-)

That would be fine with me, if it were based on John M. Ford’s fantastic Star
Trek book/Musical, How Much For Just The Planet?.

“Blueberry,” Kirk thought instead of ducking.
              WHAM!
              Blueberry it was.

I haven’t seen the movie myself (after reading a few reviews), so I don’t know if there was any bloodsucking involved, but the look of the natives of Remus is very, very similar to the look used for the vampire in Nosferatu, which is probably what he was referring to.

Let’s not forget Picard being bald in his Acadamy photograph (despite it previously being established that he had hair), and Picard wearing a modern academy uniform. I could forgive the uniform, but the hair? Frelling insulting.

The Reman. The never-before-mentioned Romulans that are affraid of bright lights (particularly sunlight), have hypnotic powers, and look like this (notice the teeth).

I saw a “making of” where the devil (currently using the moniker “Rick Berman”) and the make-up artist were discussing how proud they were of their space-nosferatu. I couldn’t believe it. I can see how the make-up guy can be proud, but that Berman would be proud of that idea? Proud?!?!

  2. There Was An XI In The Works?
What about all the talk that Star Trek: Crapesis was going to be the last of the movies for a while? I was so hopeful that they were telling the truth on that.

At the very least, can’t they wait to do another movie or series until Rick Berman is six feet under? I’m willing to wait.

Maybe this is the right time to put on the pressure to get Berman and Braga stripped of all responsibilities in the franchise. After all, Paramount’s got a new chief and heads have to roll (warranted or not) in order to establish his power…Why can’t those decapitations benefit the geeks?

I had thought that they meant it was the last TNG movie. One was suspecting that they’d do an Enterprise movie at some point.

Yeah, it’s not like anyone would want a DS9 movie.

        • Re: There Was An XI In The Works?

Yeah, it’s not like anyone would want a DS9 movie.

Given the near-zero likelihood of Ira Steven Behr being involved in such an effort, I’d say we’re better off.

Uh… I would like to see a DS9 movie. I don’t have a story in mind that I would like to see, but I found the DS9 characters to more compelling and appealing than almost all of their fellow Trek characters.

As would I – I’d like to know what happens to Odo, if Sisko ever comes out of that wormhole, or if Rom made a good Grand Nagis.

Actually, screw that – I’d love to see a movie with Quark, period. It could be Armin Shimerman running the bar for two hours and it would still be better than Nemesis.

Oooooh shit, you just really scared me there:

What if the prequel IS a DS9 movie where Sisko’s pan-dimensionnal buddies spit him out of the wormhole in the past!?

That would be horrible… therefore Berman would think it’s pure genius. Shit…

              • Re: There Was An XI In The Works?

I don’t know…. Sisko playing the Great Gazoo to Archer’s Fred Flintstone? That might not be too bad.

No you dumb-dumb! You weren’t supposed to meet the Ferengi or Borg yet! Go fight with the Klingons!

            • Re: There Was An XI In The Works?
Then go get the pocket book series that takes place after the DS9 series ends. It is quite good, and Sisko comes back in the end.

They introduce lots of new characters, explain the Andorian race and bring in a major character of that race, talk with Odo (He sends a modified Jemm’Haddr to observe/work with them), Kira gets kicked out of the Bajoran religion for publishing a found manuscript for pollitical reasons.

It was a great story arc, and would have made a great next season. Don’t think they could do it in a movie or two, maybe a mini-series but I really liked it. Then again, I enjoyed DS9 as it matured too.

              Quark is the greatest.

I had nice little “sarcasm” tags around my earlier statement, but the post stripped them (I even used the codes for brackets.). Anyone that *wouldn’t* want a DS9 movie (disclaimer: with quality on-par with series) is crazy.

Anyone that *wouldn’t* want a DS9 movie (disclaimer: with quality on-par with series) is crazy.

What if I hate DS9 because it’s NOT star trek AND it’s dumb?

Don’t get me started on the Tosk/Jem Hadar thing… but I could complain that the Dominion home world is freakin’ Solaris with a dumbed-down, “invasion of the body snatchers” spin.
                *gag* *choke* *barf*

Off course, that valid criticism doesn’t exclude that I might also be crazy, but that has nothing to do with why I don’t want a DS9 movie…

        • Re: There Was An XI In The Works?

Yeah, it’s not like anyone would want a DS9 movie.

They could do something that would take pieces of all the various treks and pull them into something different,
like put Chakotay in command with Worf as his first officer, but he ends up listening more to the advice he gets from a holographic Capt. Sulu that was a gift from Reg Barclay. Their mission is to quell an insurgence by the androids of Mudd’s World who were upgraded by Binars for the Dominion War and kept on cold storage since.

They could make it a reality show! Hordes of angry trekkers in uniform hunting and killing Rick Berman… I’d pay to see that!

Of course you would – if I was ever in a movie, I’d pay to see it (which probably means I’d be in line right behind you).

I’d pay to participate. The only problem is the meat is a little gamy, and the pelt is useless.

  3. Missed the Point
I think everyone who posted here missed the point. The point is that even-numbered ST films don’t suck, while odd-numbered ones suck (or at least are not as fundamentally good). There is one problem: ST:III most certainly did not suck. So, they had to make one even numbered ST that did suck. That restored balance. Now, XI is going to suck no matter what series they base it on, or what story they use. But watch out for ST:XII. After three sucks in a row, it’s going to be orgasmically good.

Whoo, did that ever transmit badly (I wouldn’t dare say “come across” at this point).

Or even worse, so that after four sucks in a row the one after it can be even better than watching the evil twins get hit by a couple of hundred quantum torpedoes in quick succession.

  4. They had an opportunity . . .
. . . to put some things to bed, together, so to speak.

They could have ended Voyager with a movie, wherein the TNG Enterprise encounters Voyager and returns it to DS9.

Then blow everyone one up–OK, maybe just B & B–and stop making movies.

  5. One vision without a true visionary?
What is it about Trek Adventures now that make it so unpalatable, even to Universal? The movies themselves, historically from story to story, are a hit or miss proposition as to audience satisfaction. I think there would be little disagreement as to the most satisfying adventure being Wrath of Khan. A charasimatic villian, the constant harrowing twists in their struggle, and the sacrifice of a hero all merged to provide a memorable moment on the big screen.

Though Universal has tried there is something that just doesn’t match that level of excitement that WoK presented. Some Trek movies, not all, have even fallen fall short of any expectation for enjoyment I’ve had. I wonder if it finally has translated to the sagging ratings UPN’s bean counters grumblingly acknowledge with Enterprise. But that’s a grumble for another thread.

If Paramount can’t keep us interested with a good story set in the Trek universe then maybe another visionary should be sought or another vision pursued.

    • Re: One vision without a true visionary?

…then maybe another visionary should be sought or another vision pursued.

Heh. It’s called Serenity, and it’s coming to a silver screen near you in September. Powerwatch the Firefly DVD set while yer waitin’.
