Decisions, Decisions…

While Enterprise returns tonight with a new episode, it seems like the majority of genre fans may be tuning in to Battlestar Galactica’s “premiere.”

Coupled with Sci-Fi channel’s already strong Friday lineup, could this spell the end for Trek’s current incarnation? Ironic I suppose. First three years had little-to-no genre competition and the show stunk. Now it gets better and may be crushed by competition.

Or maybe I’m overstating Sci-Fi channel’s influence?

        What’s a “decisicion”?

        A typo. Duh.

Sorry :) I thought it was some sci-fi reference/in-joke that flew over my head. I must not read too deeply into things.

  1. Bittorrent is your friend.
I’ve already seen the first 13 episodes via SkyOne.

    It does rock.

Some similarities in plot to the original, but enough differences to make it ‘all new’. The CGI is convincing, and the stories are absurd, yet placid.

I’m not sure I like the new cylon fighter. They went way out for it to be completely different than the originals, but adhered too much to the old ‘look’ of the fighters. They are cool nonetheless.

  2. DVR
It’s reasons like this that TiVo was invented ;)

Plus Enterprise is repeated locally for me on Sundays, which is okay as long as they don’t interfere with Carnivale.

    • Re: DVR
This is the reason dual tuner DirecTiVos were created. 5 hours worth of shows to record on Friday now. Enterprise, SG-1, Atlantis, BSG and Third Watch (for the wife).

angrymob, I was checking your web page, I work in Denver, if you ever need a copy of an episode let me know and I will see if I have it available. (We usually keep them for a day or two, depending).

      • Re: DVR

In Canada, the show airs on Saturdays, and then Enterprise gets re-aired (in some markets) Sunday. With that scheduling and recording technology, it won’t be a problem for anyone here who wants to watch both.

Our review and discussion of Galactica will appear Sunday OR Monday morning.

        • I thought “33” was amazing.
“Water” was good, but “33” was excellent. The episode really threw all of the characters into the crucible. The tension was great. Again, Sci Fi really did a tremendous favor to Battlestar Galactica in giving it such strong writers, and a great cast. And was that Richard Hatch, the original Apollo, in the previews for the upcoming season? They won him around somehow. :)

Yes it was indeed Richard Hatch, he has a guest slot as a terrorist/freedom fighter depending on who you ask :)

Rather on the inside spitting out that on the outside spitting in if you know what I mean :)

            Yeah, somehow… “cha-ching”…

“Enterprise” is on Sundays here, too, but too much other stuff then. Thankfully, like everything else on cable, Sci-Fi reruns its new stuff as soon as it’s shown. So, watch “Enterprise” at 8:00, “Atlantis” at 9, “BSG” at 10, and “SG-1” at 11.

  3. Battlestar is great
However, I’m really hating the cuts that they do before commercials. They’re abrupt, and completely destroy any tension. I think Glactica won me over when they first used nukes in space combat – that was one thing I was hoping to see in Enterprise, space fighting with less “scifiish” weaponry.

    • Re: Battlestar is great
I only saw the last half of “Water” because my Tivo thinks the mini series is different from the series, and while it did look good, if they want to keep me, they’d better learn how to hold the camera still. I know they’re trying for “effect”, but all they’re doing is giving the audience a headache.

      • Re: Battlestar is great
Actually, I really like the handheld camera effect. It’s a new approach (new as in still novel; the effect is pretty much lifted from Firefly), and it makes the battles look more “realistic” and less stagey to me. The “zooms” sometimes seem a little superfluous, but they’re trying for verisimillitude, and I appreciate that.

  4. Galactica > Enterprise
I’m glad I’m in Canada, and I don’t have to worry about conflicting schedules (not that I ever really did) but if I was forced to choose it would be Galactica all the way. The stories are tight, the characters are believable and the writers are sticking to an unfolding plot. As to the references/innuendo to the earlier series – I’m unfamiliar with the original BG, but every so often something will pop out at me (like Jamie Barber on screen with Richard Hatch). The Helio storyline…

Actually, I’m just going to wait for the rest of you to catch up, as I don’t want to spoil anything. I will say only this: I have yet to notice an episode where nothing happens, and I have yet to watch an episode I did not enjoy thoroughly.

This is very true – there are no fillers in Battlestar Galactica. Only two more episodes to go here in the UK, and while I’m looking forward to them immensely, I’m also worried that they may be the last ones I’ll see.

To all Americans, please tune in to Battlestar Galactica, watch it, love it, sing its praises from the highest towers (you won’t need encouragement to do it, it’s that good). Don’t let it go the way of Firefly.

      Seriously, it’s better than Firefly.

Now now, let’s not go down THAT road… no good can come of it.

I don’t know y42, it’s pretty tight. Once reviews start, I wouldn’t be surprised if a couple of these episodes gave Objects in Space some company in the Perfect 42 category. Perhaps the cameo Serenity had in the miniseries rubbed off a little bit of greatness…

            There’s a cameo?

I only got to see the “miniseries” or whatever that wa that got shown on NBC. I don’t have fancy cable, so I don’t get to watch channels like sci-fi or space or 24/7Golf and whatnot. But from the looks of the first 2 hours, I thought “well, glad to see the SFX guys from Firefly got new and exciting jobs” : )
Something about the overall space look reminded me of the external shots from Firefly… the render, the way it’s filmed with jerky camera motions simulating news footage…

I still think talk of “better” is unhealthy. However, I’m quite willing to admit that Galactica has more mass-market appeal than Firefly.

It’s OK. Breathe in, exhale, relax. :) In the half hour before BG premiered here on the Sci Fi channel, they showed a “making of” documentary. I am certain others in here who watched it also caught the line “there will be at least two seasons.” And also the line “they will never find Earth.” :)

Fear not, it seems this show has a commitment from its network. :)

        Peace,

        -Joe G.

P.S. What network is showing BG in Great Britain?

      • Re: Galactica > Enterprise

It bears no resemblance whatsoever to Firefly, shaky / zooming cameras in outer space aside. They’re both good shows, but could not be more different in approach and feel.

  5. galac
after watching the movie on tv, I really wanted to watch the series… but I don’t get sci-fi channel and don’t want to pay the extra $31.30 a month for one show.

If the run is complete, it will likely be on DVD before the end of the year.
