Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “If you have a 4K TV and a way to play 4K disks, then I’d recommend picking up Alien. Otherwise, wait until later.” Blaine says, “I agree that the most appealing titles this week are 4K titles, but I’d give the edge to Captain America: Winter Soldier. Also, A Face in the Crowd has been on my ‘must see’ list for years.”
Alien is one of those movies that really doesn’t transition well to hidef, let alone 4K. The SFX, and especially the alien suit, end up looking immersion-breakingly bad.
I rather liked Witch, but a lot of people didn’t. As I wrote in my original review, “a film for an audience that occupies the Venn overlap among horror fans, history buffs, and festival hipsters constitutes some kind of mad originality,” but it also had trouble finding a large audience.
Has anyone seen Under the Silver Lake? I’ve heard some good things.
I was annoyed with the VVitch, and we haven’t stopped giving my daughter crap for telling us to go see it. If it looks interesting to you, I’d recommend staying home and watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina instead.
So your daughter got the cool gene?
;)
It’s a movie where a poor girl has a horrible life for 99% of the movie, and just when it turns around and she gets powers and moves off to a secret world of magic and power the story ends. It’s like if Harry Potter spent three or four hours in the cupboard under the stairs, and they rolled credits after he runs through the doorway to Diagon Alley.
