Valentine’s Day approaches, and we can see the
difference in the available DVD releases. There are
loads of rereleases of romantic-type stuff for
Tuesday, February 8, 2005.

First, the genre releases:

• Highlander
  –
  The Complete Series: This is considerably cheaper
  than buying six
  seasons individually.
• Robot
  Stories: A feature length anthology of stories
  about robots. Very
  well reviewed in its theatrical release, but not well
  known.
• Sesame
  Street
  Presents – Follow That Bird: This may be
  revealing my age, but I
  have some fond memories of this movie.
• Shark
  Tale: A CGI fish mob story.
• Twilight
  Zone
  (2002) – The Complete Series: This set has
  actually been out a
  while, but this new pressing has a significant price
  drop, so I
  thought I’d point it out.

Now, the non-genre releases:

• Best
  Picture
  Oscar Collection: 18 winners of the “Best
  Picture” Oscar. If
  you’ve got the $140, pick it up.
• Cape
  Fear
  (10th Anniversary Edition): Yes, this is the
  remake.
• Deadwood
  – The
  Complete First Season: Recent winner of Golden
  Globe awards.
• Fresh
  Prince
  of Bel-Air – Complete First Season: Before Will
  Smith was a
  household name.
• Fried
  Green
  Tomators – Widescreen Collector’s Edition: Just
  in time for
  Valentine’s Day.
• Martin
  Scorsese Film Collection: Includes New York,
  New York,
  Raging Bull, Last Waltz, and
  Boxcar
  Bertha.
• On
  The Road
  with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby: A collection of
  their road movies.

Finally, the pick of the week. This was a tough
week; there are a lot
of releases, but most of them are rereleases of
romantic titles with
Valentine’s Day just around the corner. We’ve also
got a few of this
year’s Oscar nominees being rereleased to try and
drum up interest.
Still, of the new titles coming out, I can say that
Field
Of Dreams –
15th Anniversary Widescreen Edition is probably a
good choice.
Made in a time when Costner’s ego could actually fit
on the big
screen, this movie tells a good story that feels
romantic without the
standard plot trapping of a romantic comedy.
Costner’s trend to long
films is somewhat present, with a 106 minute film
based on a short
story that took up ten pages of my High School
English text, but this
one doesn’t seem to drag like his other films. Also,
suggesting this
before Valentine’s Day may score you some brownie
points that’ll help
when you come home with the final season of
Angel on February
15.
