Gods praise you, Amazon was crapping out on me and I could not see it. :)

For the past year I have been so worried about this movie. Worried that it was going to destroy the universe that Douglas Adams had created. Now seeing this, I am happy to say that I am not worried. This movie looks awsome. Here is hoping that they didn’t take the best bits and put it in the trailer.

I just took a peak at the trailer and I think you should start to worry again. Although it has been a while since I have read the book(s), I saw things in the trailer that I do not recall in the book. And things that just were not correct. If inconsistancies are this obvious in a two minute trailer, imagine how inconsistant the movie will be. Mr. Adams is turning over in his grave as I type… no seriously Mr. Adams is turning over! Quick, someone grab a shovel! We have to get him out of there!

            But.

The books are not consistent with the radio show. And neither is consistent with the BBC mini-series. So, really, the movie is consistent, by virtue of it’s very inconsistency. That, my friend, is DNA logic right there.

The BBC series wasn’t a mini-series, it was six episodes! That’s as long as the first radio series.

But what I really wanted to say was that the movie does contain some new characters and events – but that all of them were written by Douglas in the versions of the script that he worked on before he died. Other people have tidied it up since then, as it was only a draft still at the time of Douglas’ death, but it’s fundamentally still his work. I’m confident that it will be good – I’ve seen what one of the original programmers on the h2g2 site has to say about his visit to the set and storyboard and production offices, and he’s really enthusiastic about it. Time will tell, of course, but there is a lot of reason to smile here.

It is different, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be good.

Update: seen the trailer, it’s definitely different, but does look good.

I was expecting not to like the shape of the Heart of Gold, as that’s never been changed before, but it looks fantastic.

And the Vogons (also seen in still photos) look absolutely fantastic. Making them wear suits was a stroke of genius. Brilliant! I’m very excited now.

Well, I’ve been worried about this, but… if the only things we can really have against it are that it isn’t 100% exactly like the books, then it’s allright, ain’t it? I mean, it’s very similar to the books, there’s plenty that is a lot like the books (althought I’d prefer if Zaphod had dark glasses on when on Magrathea instead of a huge helmet).

Frankly, the trailer has given me a feeling of “eh, maybe this wno’t be that bad”.

Sadly, there are diehard geeks who will hate this adaptation regardless of whether it is good or not simply because of the lack or alteration of a highly cherished scene or character. Lord of the Rings has taught is that.

Based on his books and his interviews over the years, I think it would take quite a lot more than some differences between his book and a movie to make Douglas Adams turn over in his grave – most likely, a very large spatula.

  1. Good year for movies
Between this, Firefly, and Ep 3, It seems like it’ll be a decent year for movies.

Overall, I think I’m most looking forward to firefly.

  2. here’s the thing…
I was worried too. I knew they’d change some things, and they have. I never would’ve picked Mos Def to play Ford… I wouldn’t have picked Sam Rockwell (red shirt from Galaxy Quest doesn’t scream Galactic President to me) to play Zaphod. Yeah, there are changes, and some different casting than I’d’ve expected… but from what I saw on the trailer, it worked. The biggest problem some book to movie translations suffer is trying to stay too true to the exact book, when adhering to the spirit of the book would work better.

From what I saw, this movie is very much the spirit of the book (and, for that matter, the radio show… i’ve never seen the bbc series). So yeah, I’m pretty hopeful about this. And alan rickman as the voice of marvin the robot? Awesome. :)

  3. Anyone knows
how many of the books it is going to be of? And if not all is it going to be like in 3 episodes?

  4. looks fabulous.
It’d be nice if it did so well that they could make a sequel with book 3 and the whole Krikkit episode.
