Since we only know Utterson’s account, filtered through a narrator, and based on what he has learned, often through Jekyll, we’re left with the popular (especially now) question: does Jekyll’s formula truly release an evil side as Hyde, or does it just change his appearance, permitting him to behave as a respectable gentleman could not?
