Weekly DVD Picks

It’s a light week for the genre collectors, but
there’s some good stuff in the mainstream.

First, the genre releases:

Now, the non-genre releases:

Finally, the pick of the week. As some of you may have
noticed
, I’m a
bit of a film history fan. I love to look at the
earliest films and
see how much the art and technology have grown over
the past century
or so. I own a few products released by Kino Video,
which does a
great job restoring and releasing these classics.
This week, they’re
putting out Edison
– The
Invension of the Movies (1891-1918)
, a 910 minute
collection of
140 film library produced through the Edison Company.
It’s a four disk collection that includes the first
panning and
tracking shots, The Great Train Robbery, and
a number of
other classics. It may not be for everyone, but it’s
a must have for
film history buffs. Complete details and listings
are available from the
Kino Video
page
for it.

It try’s too hard to be funny. The guest stars are has-beens. Ah yes, I can see it now-

FX corp: thank you mr. lee for coming, we want to make a superhero show and you were the first one we called.

Stan Lee: thank you for having me, now what did you have in mind

FX corp: mr. lee, lets make a “I was hot 10 years ago, now im white trash” actress a superhero

Stan Lee: you got to be fucking kidding me, im Stan Lee, who did you have in mind

FX corp: (talking into speaker box) send her in.

Pam Anderson Lee: Hi, im super has-been babe Pam Anderson.

Stan Lee: BOOBIES (clears throat) im sorry but I have seen Baywatch and barb wire, and not even medical science can implant talent.

FX corp: (using Jedi mind trick) you will do this show for us mr. lee, and TV spots to advertise it and you will bless it as your best work yet.

Stan Lee: (in zombie mode) yes, this will be my best work ever

Now don’t get me wrong, Stan Lee is my GOD, but he must have been under something to support that crap by putting his name on it!

I saw an interview with him when it was announced. The
interviewer asked why he chose to become involved in the
project. His response: “When Pamela Anderson asks for
something, what man can say no?” The interviewer tried
probing for a serious answer, and there wasn’t one. That
was it. I don’t even know how involved the man is with
      the series.

Didn’t Stan Lee work on a Web-based comic featuring the Backstreet Boys turned into superheroes too? Or was it N*SYNC? Some boy-band that I never cared for, in any event.

I hope Stan’s not turning into a parody of himself.

Was originally supposed to ship in august, but those evil rat bastards at Disney decided to hold it back to coincide somewhat with the walking castle thingy…

Have I made my feelings about Disney’s marketing department clear, I wonder?

  3. History…

It may not be for everyone, but it’s a must have for film history buffs.

    3 words: Les frères Lumière.

      I am aware
of their genius, and tempted to collect even
      more
      of it.

        Er, those were both Méliès…

What I meant to do was dismiss Edisson’s claim that he inveted everything he got patents for. He was the early 20th century’s Bill Gates: A good businessman with some technical savy. It just so happens that his pretentions to being an inventive genius were usefull to the United States’ propaganda, and so have been repeated often enough to be assimilated by many as truth. I like to occasionally make a symbolic effort to undo propaganda…

I really don’t see the appeal of this movie.

Usually in these sort of films, the main protagonist goes off on a spiritual quest to garner some meaning of his life. This is like those, but the twist here is that instead of going somewhere else, the lead stays where he is and hires people to follow him around to observe him, and supposedly determine why he is the way he is.

Voyage of Discovery movies are supposed to be thought-provoking. This one tries to be funny, but just isn’t. The only thoughts that came to mind, for me, were along the lines of “why did I go to see this drek?”.

And, the one thing I’ve seen that really irks me is the people who will say I don’t get it. I do, and I still didn’t like it. There have been better movies that were less predictable, less annoying and less boring, and, most importantly, entertaining.

Seriously, don’t buy this movie, wait until it hits cable, or if you must, rent it. it was awful.
