Serenity Trailer Tuesday

Full details can be found straight from Joss Whedon’s
keyboard: the
Serenity trailer hits the web on Tuesday
. He
also says that the same trailer will hit theaters on
Friday, though he hasn’t confirmed which ones. These
things are usually paired to another release by the
same studio, but Universal Pictures (who picked up the
movie rights from Fox and actually made the thing;
kudos to them!) doesn’t have any releases that
weekend, so there may not be guarantees on any
particular print. Still, there would be no
prohibitions, either, and Hitch Hiker’s Guide To
The Galaxy
is a mighty logical choice. If I were
still a projectionist, I’d pair those up.

  1. Indecision
Joss mentioned it had some spoilers so I’m not sure if I want to watch it or not. They’re probably showing lots of good footage to get the general public interested, who wouldn’t understand in-jokes.

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that.
But all trailers contain spoilers, and what are the chances of not seing this between now and septembre? Avoiding all sci-fi movies? Avoiding TV altogether for 2 weeks before it starts showing? Plus the comix this summer…

We were supposed to have already seen it by now, I guess it’ll just awnser a question about characters, like, what did they do that to River for anyway?

I’m going to try my best to avoid this trailer like the plague. I’ve never actually done this before, but this movie deserves at least my attempt at watching it spoiler-free.

Ok, it can be done, but it’s hard.

          1. Get 10 minutes late to all the movies you see in theatres starting friday. That way you miss the trailers in theatres.
          2. Learn to look away, plug your ears and sing loudly to yourself as soon as the TV commercial start airing. You might enlist the help of people close to you to change the channel for 30 seconds when this happen so you don’t get weak and look or listen anyway.

          I tried that for LotR:RotK but it didn’t work, I caved :-(

Tried it for Matrix 2 and caved as well :(

I managed it for Starship Trooper, and I was glad I did, when the flyers came out, I was surprised
              : )

I succeeded in avoiding the Matrix 3 stuff, my wife was pregnant and our son was born the day it came out. We saw it three weeks later and the theatre was almost completely empty.

Wasn’t the Matrix3 ads at the end of Matrix2?

    • Re: can’t… wait…

Where is it? Post, Quicktime, post!

I’ve heard it won’t be posted til 1pm PST (about 2.75 hours from now) :(

          http://apple.com/trailers/universal/serenity/

Anyone care to post an actual link directly to the trailers? I don’t have admin rights on my work PC, so I can’t install itunes, WHICH IS REQUIRED!

iTunes is only required for the full-screen version. The others just need the QuickTime codec.

          SP

Yeah, I forgot about that. So, I tried the smaller versions, and I’ve found that there’s something else in the way, and maybe it’s at our company firewall.

I’ll see it when I get home.

Can’t wait ’til I get home then. FULL SCREEN, BABY!

I’ve got a mac, with osx 10.3.9 and quicktime pro 6, and the bloody things says it needs a software component that’s not on the server even. Arggghhh!

        • Re: Its out!
At least my mac at work with plain old free quicktime played it. It looks like the first half is basically a summarization of the series re: river. I suppose it had to be to catch up everyone who didn’t see the series, but I think it’s going to leave me wanting more (well, duh ;-) ) because there’s only going to be a little new stuff. I guess I’ll take what I can get though…

It did it to me, then Firefox played it.

          Silly buggers

  2. Two things
First: wow! Get me a ticket now!

Second: Sound in space? SOUND in SPACE? Damn them!

In space… it sounds like me not caring.

      This movie’s gonna rawk!

      Thank you.

But the point of Firefly – well, one of the original points in Joss’ vision – was that there wouldn’t be sound in space, because, well, there isn’t. Oh well, it’s minor compared to the amazing rockingness of the trailer.

Well, Watching It Again, I Get The Feeling Sounds Were Added For The Trailer. There’s A Few Clips Where There Are lots Of Starships, But You Don’t hear Any Sound From Those clips. Occasionally You Hear Some Sound, But It Looks Like It’s When The Ship Is Near A Planet, And Entering/Exitting Orbit.

So… Maybe Sound, Maybe Not. I Still Think That Was Put In For The trailers.

  3. This does not appear to pick up where the series left off …
This appears to be a re-imagining of the series and its premise, the whole story arc condensed in two hours. It looks astonishingly good, but I’d bet we’ll have to forget some of the things we know (from the series) when we go in to see this film.

“This looks like an oh God oh God we’re all going to die moment.” Wash is amazing. :)

It was originally supposed to be set after the series, but accessible to people who hadn’t watched it, which means we’ll probably be treated to some information we already had. Looks like they’ve taken the major arc about River and pushed most of that into the film, which is fine – they needed to pick something to make it about! We shall of course see what we see, when it’s time to see it. How will I survive until September? It’d better not be late coming out in Europe!

I shall keep my fingers crossed for my fine European bretheren and sisteren (yes, I know sisteren ain’t a word.) :) I absolutely despise the way things have been released in the past, region by region, but I think we’re seeing the big studios finally starting to realize that any time they do a regional release they are losing potential box office or DVD sales in other markets due to piracy.

  4. Still Excited, Trailer…meh
I’m still jacked up to see Serenity but that trailer clearly isn’t designed to entice fans of the series (why would it, since fans are going anyway?). Whomever made the final cut on the trailer is either a) suffering from ADHD or b) following the studio-approved,cookie-cutter scifi/action trailer formula. I certainly hope that it inspires the people who didn’t pay any attention to Firefly, but it didn’t do a thing for me. I refuse, however, to let it dissuade me from being excited about the movie. I need it too much. :)

  5. Sneak preview on May 5
If you live in one of the ten lucky cities, you get a chance to catch a sneak preview of the movie on May 5.

    Seattle
    Austin
    Sacramento
    Boston
    Altanta
    Chicago
    San Francisco
    Las Vegas
    Denver
    The Portland of Oregon

Look for the ticket links here:

Too bad they’re sold out – that’s a road trip I wouldn’t have minded making (and Chicago is 8 hours for me).

I wonder if there will be scalpers?

Argh, a Thursday? I could never get the hang of Thursdays…oops, I’m quoting from the wrong movie.

      Drat, none near me.

  6. looks completely awesome
as I knew it would. No question that I’ll see this in the theater.

  7. The Big Damn Spoiler
I’ve been watching and rewatching, and I think what the spoiler Joss warned us about is: Mal says “They won’t see this coming…” and he’s attacking the Alliance with… a Reaver fleet!!!, and, so: WHOA!!! :D

Note that wasn’t necessarily a spoiler it’s entirely possible, probable even, that for the purposes of exposition they show a clip of ships leaving Earth That Was back when it was Earth That Is Or Was So Until Quite Recently remember folks not all apparent spoilers are really spoilers I thought the spoiler was where they seemed to be going with the River storyline which seemed fairly easily extrapolated anyways

Er, my real “spoiler” is up there, behind the “WHOA!”, the other bit I interpreted same as you, but it’s still nice to not know too much when people don’t want to, so I keep ’em spoiler-protected out of courtesy : )
