Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2020 April 19

Still inside?  Good news!  The Flash and the Legends have Defeated Corona and returned, with the Flash bringing the creepiest of assassins, Rag Doll back while the Legends seem to be planning a pastiche of Supernatural.  The anti-penultimate episode of Westworld arrives and the episode descriptions are just outright making fun of the people who are looking for individual episode descriptions.  Zoey listens to a SPRQ Point turf war, which probably will give us West Side Story vibes.  Cosmos gives a bright look at the near future.  Saul gives us season five’s finale.  The Blacklist seeks to help Dembe’s buddy.  If you want some animation, Louie turns 11 on DuckTales and Spider-Man gives some some symbiote shenanigans.

[All synopses (and titles) from Trakt.tv below the cut, except when there really aren’t any.  (If a show’s synopsis is a spoiler to you, do not click More…)]

  1. I wasn’t expecting the ending of Westworld, that was kinda brutal. I am still having trouble considering Tessa’s character as being Delores. Tessa seems to be acting wonderfully, but the script calls for her to be completely different than I think the character should be acting. Which I also get is part of the idea, but it seems further divergent from what I think it should be. The little after-credit thing on last episode makes it pretty clear that is the idea (calling her Hale-ores), but I think she should still be more Delores than she has been.

    • I’m going to be addressing that in the next review, but it seemed less “off” for me. She’s inhabiting a new body and context and that is moving her in a new direction. I think zocalo makes an interesting comparison with Danaerys. Neither development is out-of-character, but I concede it happens quickly.

  2. I think it’s a similar problem to Danaerys in the latter seasons of Game of Thrones. They really need more time to show the character’s evolution and divergence from the original “template” into individuality, but with only eight episodes to play with that was always going to be a challenge.

Still, I think the idea and the underlying question it asks is sound. What we basically seem to be witnessing is a host becoming “human”, or at least gaining an understanding of basic humanity and how that relates to things like compassion.. That seems to have fairly obvious ties to the opening credit sequence imagery and should hopefully mean that we’re in for quite a thought provoking payoff. Definitely looking forwards to see where they take this.

    • I don’t think it happened quite as fast as it feels to us given that we basically get a highlights reel. I also think it was bringing out something that was already there in her character so having put her in that context, it’s not surprising it would come out fairly quickly.

        • That makes sense. A year or two as Mommy Hale-ores to change while, for lack of a better name, Delores Prime plays Black Widow and gets more and more cynical, driving them further and further apart makes much sense, but because we only for a few episodes if feels “overnight”.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there.

      • Yep, it’s more about our perception due to the airtime than in-verse time, which is likely to be much longer once off-camera events are factored in, just as it was with GoT where they omitted what would have been several episodes, clearly spanning months of travel time in previous seasons. We also have the whole issue of timelines to factor in; Hale-ores, has been running around since before the other prominent hosts this season were even printed, and some of *those* arcs also seem to span several months.
