  1. We just couldn’t get into Grand Hotel, watching it to the end but finding it somewhat tedious. The cast is legendary. The acting is good. It’s well-made. The story probably makes a good novel. It just didn’t appeal much to either of us.

    I grew up in a Canada/US border community and heard the echoes of an urban legend that a certain Grand Hotel in Michigan was used as the location. It wasn’t. Maybe I went in with the lingering influence of a trans-generational cultural childhood disappointment, if that’s a thing.

    But Shanghai Express? Great! And Freaks? A must-see, despite its serious technical limitations.

    And James Whale’s Frankenstein, as you say, has a cultural significance that few films can match.
