Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2020 May 10

Happy Mother’s Day!  If you aren’t too busy baking or breaking bread for your mom, television’s Dominating Caste of heroes has a bunch of shows for you, as Batwoman searches for rich folks, Supergirl fights biblical monsters, The Flash might end its season, but might almost send its season, and the Legends get schooled  at Animal House.  Blindspot tries to build their own FBI level operation while on the run, taking the show into the realm of fantasy, and Blacklist toys with the idea of killing off their hit character to shift the spotlight back to the female lead.  There have been multiple reports of seasons ending and shows finishing early as the studios had gone into lockdown, but there were enough conflicting reports that each episode could be the last and it would not be surprising.  Equally ambiguous, She-Ra might drop season five this week.

Call your mom!

  1. Having watched this week’s Flash, I understand why they chose to mark this episode as the finale rather than showing the next episode as well (which was allegedly finished, or at least finishable). It wasn’t brilliant as a season finale, but at least it sort of works. It should mean we have a little bit less filler in the early going next season as they have to sort out the dangling plot points before moving forward with their plan for the next season.

      • It wasn’t originally intended to be the finale but because production was shut down by the virus, they didn’t get to finish filming the actual finale. Given that they’re not likely to be able to restart particularly soon, it makes sense that they pick up the story line again when the next season starts. Which, apparently, probably won’t be until 2021. At least they’re not committing to a fall premier date (and doing so would be foolish at the moment given the unknowns). It will all depend on when the workplace shutdowns and border closures ease.

        • I think we’re possibly going to have to wait a little longer than that. It’s not like you can maintain social distancing when you’re shooting a fight scene, unless it’s “superpowers at 10 paces” or something, and genre shows do tend to have a fair number of fight scenes. As we just saw with a certain press secretary daily testing is no guarantee that you can’t become infectious, so it would be a huge risk to start shooting given that you might lose actors at random points. Factor in that some principal actors might be in higher-risk groups and not be willing to do close contact scenes and you have a bit of a production problem, to say the least.

It’s either that, or we’re going to need a lot more dialogue and a lot less one-on-one action in the next seasons of shows, in which case I just hope that all the various writers are up to it. Yeah, probably better to wait.

            • Necessity is the mother of invention. Even if it’s just a one-off serial that fleshes out a universe, or maybe shows a different perspective on it, while waiting for normal service to resume, I’ll take it over repeats.

Then again, I’ve a lot of box sets I haven’t watched for ages that I’m currently working through, so either works for me.

  2. Blacklist was interesting, as they took everything they hadn’t finished filming for the season and animated it as best they could. It was an interesting CGI style, which felt like a video game with Comic Book like captions. It wasn’t bad, but they probably could have used more time to work on it. Still, I greatly prefer what we got rather than a delayed end to the season for just a few scenes.
