The sheer volume of releases is up, with new titles,
and with price reduced releases of existing titles.
First, the genre releases:
- Alien
Nation: I can’t tell if this is a new printing or
a rerelease, but
it’s worthwhile. - The
Boy Who
Could Fly: An amusing drama that I remember
fondly. - The
Dead Zone
– The Complete Third Season: The series marches
on. - Doctor
Who – Ghost
Light (Episode 157): One of two releases. Note
that by “episode”
they really mean story arc; this is a three
parter. - Doctor
Who – The
Leisure Hive (Episode 110): Similarly, this is a
four part
episode. - Lois
and Clark
– The New Adventures of Superman – The Complete First
Season: This
was the good year for the series. It’s also a part of
the WB TV’s
50th anniversary collection, so it includes a bonus
disc with
Smallville‘s season four premier - Memoirs
of an
Invisible Man: The Chevy Chase movie with no
connection to the
H.G. Wells masterpiece. - The
Outer
Limits – The Original Series, Season One: This has
been released
before, but not at this price. - The
Outer
Limits – The Original Series, Season Two: This has
been given a
similar price reduction. - Star
Trek:
Insurrection – Special Collector’s Edition:
Another “silver box”
release. - Stargate
Atlantis: Rising: The pilot episode of the spinoff
series. - Stargate
SG1
Season Two: This looks like a price reduced
rerelease. - Stargate
SG1 –
Season Five: See above. - The
Twilight
Zone – The Complete Series (2002): This has been
available on DVD
for some time. (I have a copy myself; if anyone wants
a review, speak
up.) The price is much lower now, though. This works
out to just
under a dollar an episode. - The
X-Files
Mythology, Vol. 1 – Abduction: The mythology
collections just
include those that contribute significantly to the
overall story arc.
If you didn’t want to pick up complete season packs
but wanted to see
the conspiracy, this is what you’re looking for.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- Bad
Girls – The
Complete First Season: Positively reviewed, but
I’ve still never
seen it. - Be
Cool: I
haven’t seen this one, but the original was
amusing. - Cellular:
A
thriller from last fall. - Degrassi
Junior High
– Season 2: I didn’t even know season one was out.
This is a lot
more impressive when you realize that Canadian
teenagers did
everything here before and behind the camera. - I
Love Lucy – The
Complete First Season: Respectable, quality
packages of the series
are finally being made available. - INXS
– What You Need:
The Video Hits Collection: What can I say? I like
the band’s work. - MacGyver
– The
Complete Season Season: Don’t thank MacGyver;
thank the moon’s
gravitational pull! - Pauly
Shore Is
Dead: And all this time, I thought it was just his
career that had
died. - The
Sopranos –
The Complete Fifth Season: Mob movies on TV. - Stripes
(Extended Cut): I still haven’t seen any cut of
this film.
Finally, the pick of the week. Wonder
Woman – The
Complete Third Season: This wraps up the series.
I’ve reviewed
the first season already,
and what I’ve
seen from the second season was an improvement on
that. Expect
superheroes to stay on top until we get a big budget
tanker and lousy
franchise sequels again. Still, with Joss Whedon
writing and
directing the Wonder Woman movie, there’s
good reason to be
hopeful.
Stripes
Stripes was a good movie–it has a place in my memories right next to Animal House and Ghost Busters. Definitely recommended.
Cellular…
is an enjoyable flick, worth renting.
