Two more days until another round of DVDs are
available.
First, the genre releases:
- Gatchaman
Collector’s Box: Alex Ross painted the box art.
That’s almost
enough to make me buy it. - H.G.
Wells’
The War of the Worlds: An adaptation that hits
video just before
the Spielberg movie hits theaters. I think we can
guess which is the
better film. - Highlander:
The Raven: The complete collection of the spinoff
series on nine
disks. - Man-Thing:
A direct to video adaptation of the Marvel comics
character. Go in
with very low expectations.
Now, the non-genre releases:
- The
Bette
Davis Collection: This includes Mr. Skeffington,
The Star, Dark
Victory, The Letter, and Now Voyager - Casino:
10th
Anniversary Edition: This was the movie that
convinced people
Sharon Stone could act. Then she promptly forgot how
to do so, and
made Diabolique, Last Dance, and
Sphere. - A
Dirty Shame
(NC-17 Theatrical Release): It’s a John Waters
thing. Also
available in a John Waters boxed
set. - Heaven
Can
Wait (Criterion Collection): I swear that
Criterion can do no wrong. - Hitch:
Will Smith’s latest is probably not his greatest. - Joan
Crawford
Collection: Includes Humoresque, Possessed, The
Damned Don’t Cry,
The Women, and Mildred Peace. - Northern
Exposure: Season Three: I wasn’t a big fan of the
series, but I
need to give them credit for some great
packaging.
Finally, the pick of the week. Jaws
– 30th
Anniversary Edition: The original soundtrack has
been restored,
and is one option among several remastered versions.
There have been
other editions, and I’m not sure any are special
enough to justify
owning more than one, but for those of us who don’t
have copies yet,
this is the best choice.
Highlander: Raven
I am a big fan of the Highlander movies and the series with Adrian Paul. I especially like Amanda (Elizabeth Gracen) in the Highlander series, so I went into Raven with high expectations. But the few episodes I saw were bad, really bad. Sigh…
