Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2020 August 2

The list of new shows shortens, but it would have been a feat of dedication to finish the Umbrella Academy already.  Perry Mason continues his deeper investigation into the churches extra investments, while Stargirl goes on the run from the villains.  It’s a Brand New Day, and the sun is high on SHIELD, while the Doom Patrol gets into candle making.  Once you’re done with that, you can watch a Muppet version of a put-upon SysAdmin deal with … well, muppets.

[All synopses (and titles) from Trakt.tv below the cut, except when there really aren’t any.  (If a show’s synopsis is a spoiler to you, do not click More…)]

The Umbrella Academy – S02 – [No description given, but there was a trailer.]

Perry Mason – S01E07 – Chapter 7 – Hoping to expose the hidden link between the Radiant Assembly’s staggering debt and Charlie’s ransom, Mason puts Herman Baggerly on the stand. Sister Alice faces mounting pressure from the church elders about her promises for a “resurrection.” Strickland loses track of a key witness, while Drake’s detective work opens a new avenue in the case.

Stargirl – S01E12 – Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. (1) – With the ISA on their trail, Courtney, Pat and the team regroup to figure out their next steps. Meanwhile, Rick makes a breakthrough, and the team prepares for a showdown with the ISA.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – S07E11 – Brand New Day – Sibyl and Nathaniel continue their fight to shape a dark new future for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Doom Patrol – S02E09 – Wax Patrol – Before the Doom Patrol can answer a call to save the world from The Candlemaker in the season finale, they must first battle long-forgotten imaginary friends.

Muppets Now – S01E02 – Fever Pitch – Fozzie Bear has some big ideas for Muppets Now, and there’s no time like the deadline to start pitching! He’s found a very tough audience in Scooter, who just wants to finish uploading the latest delivery.
We see the very first episode of a game show that Pepe the King Prawn totally just made up. The Swedish Chef tries to cook a better molé sauce than his competitor, Danny Trejo. Dr. Bunsen Honeydew has replaced Beaker with a new smart assistant, and things get fired up. Miss Piggy and her guests, Taye Diggs and Linda Cardellini, show viewers how to work it out when they share the secret to staying healthy.

  1. Seems they finally confirmed how time travel is working on Shield. I mean, it was pretty obvious it had to be that way, but we have what seems to be an official confirmation. You would have thought the events with the destroyed Earth situation would have made it clear, but keep in mind that the team has been *busy* and once you get fixated on a course of action (preserve the timeline), it’s easy to have tunnel vision. It’s also possible that different time travel mechanisms have different effects (see the time stone being used to rewind time).

That said, that time loop episode had some interesting possible implications if they chose to go there (which they probably didn’t). I’m also now fairly convinced that Fitz is a red herring and that is part of the “plan”.

I’m kind of dreading next week. I’m half expecting a sequence of main characters dying to get the chosen hero to the final battle. After which everyone lives happily every after. Oh, wait. Wrong show. More likely we’ll get a “random” character death to make the “stakes feel real” or something. Alas, that character would probably be Deek. (I thought Sousa but then remembered the relative roles of Daisy and Jemma.)

    • I was surprised to see we are so close to the end, I thought we had more time.

SHIELD has been pretty good about recognizing expectations, then subverting them (or using them,) such as Coulson’s seeming immortality. I suspect we will be treated to a few surprises for the finale.

  2. Expect reviews tonight/tomorrow of the last three episodes of Doom Patrol, Season 2, and of tonight’s premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks.
