Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “I liked Pitch Black a lot – and I think a good 4K master should actually benefit this film well, particularly considering how the film uses ranges of light and shadow.” Blaine says, “of those I’ve seen, I’d suggest Chaos on the Bridge, but I’m also very tempted by the classic Agatha Christie titles I’ve never seen.”
The Goonies is a classic.
Which I will never, ever get.
Granted, I saw it as a very young adult, on a really boring night. We couldn’t get into it and, granted, we weren’t the target audience, but I can enjoy a lot of kids movies. I liked E.T. when it came out a couple years earlier.
The reviews for Goonies, for that matter, were not that good, overall, at the time.
Sometime in the 1990s, it became a Beloved Childhood Classic.
Tried to watch it again. Nope. Nope. Nope.
But by all means, enjoy.
I missed The Goonies in the ’80s. My family all went to see it and I was in a bad young-teenage mood that day and just didn’t want to go. I guess it was one of those days where people would rather just not deal with you, so they let me stay home and be pissy.
And given that I was also living A. in the ’80s, and B. in a country with no cable TV, and C. VCRs were something rich people had, I didn’t even have the chance to see it for many, many years.
And by the time I went “Y’know, I should really watch that” it just didn’t work for me. I’d probably have liked it as a kid (not loved it), but as an adult it really didn’t have an appeal.
You guys are really making me question my fondness for the movie.
So is this a good or bad time to say I’ve never cared for it, even when I was nine years old and seeing it on video for the first time, and I consider it to be Richard Donner’s worst movie?
Please don’t! Nothing wrong with watching it through the lens of previous experience and remembering how it made you happy in the past.
That’s like when I went back to re-watch He-Man.
…it was not the height of fantasy/sci-fi entertainment that five year old me thought it was.
I was an original Scooby fan, having watched season one in its original 1969/70 broadcast. I have great affection for the franchise, as anyone around here knows. But I am well aware that the original is pitched squarely at young children, and it has had more than its share of low points over the years.
