It’s still weird that the animals talk, and the humans reaction to conversation and obivous sentience is to kill and eat the animal.
Obviously that clear examples of sentience aren’t there in our world, but I still strong suspect that humans are horrible enough that these stories wouldn’t be innacurate even if they were.
