Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “If you have a way to play 4K disks, the Back to the Future Trilogy collection feels like a good addition to your collection (unless there’s something particularly untoward with the transfer). The BBC’s animated reconstructions of Patrick Troughton stories have, thus far, been fantastic. If you don’t have a way to watch 4K disks, I’d recommend getting The Faceless Ones instead.” Blaine says, “I completely agree with everything that Alex just said.”
I am not sure if my lack of interest in these releases is due to the lack of interesting releases because the pandemic has pushed interesting things back, or because “digital discs are dead.” I am inclined to blame the pandemic because it’s not like there were a lot of non-disc releases that I was interested in lately.
…Or I am just an old curmudgeon who isn’t into any of these young whippersnapper’s releases.
The pandemic is a part of it. We’re down to a lot of library releases, and since 4K hasn’t taken the world by storm and we’re still using a video format that hit the market 25 years ago, there aren’t a whole lot of library titles that haven’t come out yet worth talking about.
When I started this column, the October release list would have over 2000 titles to sift through. Now we rarely break 150.
I’m pretty sure that Scarecrow and Mrs. King and The Gunslinger don’t quite qualify as “whippersnapper” fare. :)
However, My Neighbour Totoro is an anime I’ve actually seen, and that’s saying quite a bit, and The Plot Against America is worth seeing, though, personally, I wouldn’t buy it.
