Movie Discussion – “The Island”

This looks interesting, and strikes me as being
(conceptually) a bit like Logan’s Run from
the look of the ads.

  1. logan’s run
Logan’s Run was a typical 70’s movie (gratuitous nudity + laughable dated utopian visuals, etc), which injured it fatally. IMO, it sucked. The basic storyline had plenty of potential. Maybe in 30 years we’ll be laughing at the complete cheese of “The Island”, but judging by the previews, I doubt it.

Johanssen and MacGregor are both good actors who’ve proven they can act. Scarlett hasn’t done action yet as far as I know, but thats typically not the most demanding in terms of acting skill. I think this looks like a great movie, probably one i’ll see in the theater.

Being quite the conniseur of any nudity I could find I’ve seen Logan’s run on DVD, and on HBO, and on regular TV and haven’t seen what I’d deem as ‘nudity’

      Where praytell is said Nudity?

Jenny Agutter is nude briefly in the scene with Box, as Jessica 6 and Logan 5 change from wet clothes into furs. I think Farrah also had a brief wardrobe malfunction at one point, and one or two of Logan’s prospective dates may also have been partially nude. In all cases it was a matter of a few frames and easily excised from a broadcast TV version.

(Well, actually I liked Mike and the bots better.)

I liked this when it was a Sliders episode… and about 700 different comic books… 0 for originality, but flying motor”cycles” are fun to watch ;-)

Hey, if you want to see the MST3K version click here and download it with emule. =)

BTW, the writer/director dude that made the original movie is pissed as michael bay didn’t ask him or credit him for writing the original movie this was based on and now he’s considering suing

  3. just saw it… my take
I enjoyed the film very much but some of the obvious flaws in the movie are hard to deal with. The action was fun but as a scifi fan I have to be at least somewhat critical. The following is what got to me the most about this film…

-The Director (Sean Bean) states that the clones have not been introduced or made aware of the concept of sex. Yet there is clearly a pregnant woman among them! Just how do they think she got this way then? I know the clones are supposed to be submissive and non-questioning by nature, but they would have to have some explanation, and a good one, for a pregnancy.

-Lincoln 6E reproduces drawings of a boat, and even the name of it, that is owned by his original sponsor. Now I could buy that the clone might be able to draw well and even have an innate fascination and affinity for vehicles, but for him to be able to draw the exact boat and name it is total BS. Every self-respecting geneticist knows that environmental factors will not manifest in a clone. There is know way 6E could have known about the boat or the name – memories and that sort are not encoded in genetic material. That’s why, as the film makes a point of demonstrating, 6E speaks in a neutral dialect while his original has a scottish dialect. Same principle applies to learned skills and memories you doofs.

-The institute is clearly a huge place and has hundreds of support staff (medical, security, maintenance personnel) like Steve Buscemi’s character. It’s hard to believe that every single one of them can be in on this racket and not leak something to the press or outside world in general.

-When Jordan 2D (Scarlett Johanssen) is captured and brought back to the institute, she manages to smuggle a pistol all the way to the freaking operating table! I mean, come on! Those goons were supposedly ex Delta-Force and they didn’t find a gun on their prisoner? I had knee surgery last month and when you go in for surgery you change out of your regular germy clothes and I can tell you it’s pretty hard to get a gun in there. What’s more is that for someone who’s never used a gun before she is remarkably proficient with it.

-Product placement. UGH! Apple, Aquafina, Honda, and probably many more that I missed. I’m paying to see a movie dammit, not a commercial.

Other than these complaints though I enjoyed it and found it thoroughly entertaining. I guess part of the fun was picking out the flaws too!
