Stargate Atlantis Discussion

nkuzmik writes, If nobody else will start the discussion, I will, and I’ll do it with a question: Is Dex enhanced in some way? I mean he has been killing Wraith singlehanded for seven years, and he went hand-to-hand with Super-Ford.Any thoughts?

  1. Super-Dex
    I would say yes.

In his ‘origin’ flashback we saw a Wraith attempting to feed on Dex and showing a surprised face. My guess is the Wraith was surprised to find Dex not draining normally after being given the enhancing/preservative enzyme.

After that the Wraith made Dex a runner to hunt him for sport. Hunting a normal human wouldn’t be much of a challenge for a Wraith. Perhaps when they occasionally find a human that can take lots of enhancing enzyme and not die/drain they use him for sport.

Clearly Dex can hold his own against similarly-enhanced super-Ford, so he must be enhanced in SOME way.

Bingo. This guy probably has some tolerance for the wraith feeding enzyme. That was sensed. They figure “this is a good one to play with.”

      The rest is history.

BTW, he wasn’t killing wrait bare handed, he was armed with some sort of “blaster” type weapon that had a stun setting (explicitly stated) and a lethal setting (as opposed to a non-lethal stun setting.)

The FX on that weapon looked just like those stun rounds SG1 used in the MP5s for training purposes. The glowing red things that were loading into the magazines in place of live ammo. Like practicing with a miles laser, but with a kick. ENTRAMS or something sounding similar. The episode with the super-brat from the Air Force academy.

I’d google for the name of the weapon and the name of the episode, but I’m feeling lazy.

Bah, excuse me I read “singlehanded” as “barehanded”. Forgive me.

  2. Steve Rogers or Bruce Wayne
I’m leaning more towards genetic mutation rather than artificial enhancement.
Either that, or he could be that galaxy’s version of Batman and he’s got a
similar gene as the one from Poisoning the Well.

I think if the Wraith found someone naturally immune to them they would be pretty upset about it and would dissect him instead of setting him free with a Lojack in him.

I concur. Even if they were familier with his immunity, they would want to at least kill him so he can’t pass that gene along.

Unless that gene was something they want

Ah-hah! Now that we know the Wraith have a plan, we need to find out if:

          • There are many copies.
          • Some are programmed to think they are Human.
          • They Look and Feel Human.
          • They Evolved.
          • They Rebelled.
          • The Wraith were created by Man.

Granted, that’s working backwards, but hey, you revealed the plan before you revealed the rest of it.

          • The Wraith were created by Man.
          • Funny you should mention that. I think it is clear that the Wraith *were* created by man. One episode mentioned that the ancients were experimenting with life-sucking bugs to discover ways to increase life-span artificially. Since it’s pretty unlikely that that planet would have evolved human-formed life-suckers (Wraith) I think the Wraith are a genetic experiment gone bad.

I do remember that, and thinking that it was a nice story element, but they seemed to have dropped it. I wonder if we’ll hear it again.

If anyone failed to notice at the end of the last episode there wasn’t just a culling on the homeworld of Dex. They were exterminated. Same fate that we saw in Poisonining The Well. A genetic mutation would be consistant with the behavior of the wraith as we’ve seen them so-far.

    • Re: Brief aside
I must have missed something somewhere. Why is there a discussion thread on a show like Stargate: Atlantis and not Stargate or BSG which I feel are much better shows and worthy of discussion?

I submited a discussion thread on SG1, but the dog need a walk before I had a chance to submit the BSG discussion thread. Not sure why the SG1 thread didn’t go up.

  3. I dunno
I don’t know about ‘enhanced’ or not, but both my girlfriend and one of her other friends who were watching with us thought he was “totally hot”. They want him to stay. (:

Personally, I think he’s just, well. cool. I don’t think anyone did anything to make him enhanced, the wraith just ‘sensed’ that he’d be a challenge to hunt, unlike ‘normal’ humans. Mmm?

When I first saw him in the comercials, even before I knew his name, my thought was “Riddick Lite.”

  4. not weird, just different
I don’t know if we can deem him “enhanced” just because he’s powerful relative to humans (even ones on steroids, or the occasional lone Wraith). It’s possible that any member of his race could’ve been able to take on Ford, but Dex alone possessed the mutation that made him inedible.

The show simultaneously makes the Wraith intelligent hunters and mindless animals. One would think the Wraith wouldn’t have let a sole survive if he had an immunity to their feeding. Then again, they fell for the “let’s make the city disappear” plot device.

  5. Some humans ARE immune to the wraith
In the first season, there was a race of people that the wraith COULDN’T suck the life out of, in fact if they tried they would die. A weapon was made out of their blood and tried out on a wraith POW. I don’t remember all the details of that episode now however.
