Weekly DVD Picks – August 16, 2005

There aren’t many titles to pick from this week, but they’re good ones.

First, the genre releases:

  • Disney’s
    Timeless Tales Vol. 1
: Three shorts are named on the package, but
the product listing mentions five of them. The three that are named
have already been released as part of the Walt Disney Treasures
    series.
  • Gatchaman
    Vol. 3 and 4
: I don’t know much about the series, but those Alex
Ross covers still draw me in.
  • Sin City:
This is supposed to be available in four different covers, though I
see no way to control which one you get through the Amazon.com page.

Now, the non-genre releases:

Finally, the pick of the week. The Simpsons –
Complete Season Six
: This runs up to “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” It’s
also the first shaped package. In this case, it’s shaped like Homer’s
head. Seasons 7-10 will apparantly be shaped like Marge, Lisa,
Maggie, and Bart in that order. (Why leave Bart until last? I’m
betting more collectors would want to have Bart and Homer in the set
than the others. If you bookend with those two, you’re more likely to
get people to buy all five, rather than just enough to get the two
they want.) Be that as it may, this was one of the last great series
for the series I lost interest in several years ago. We’ve got the
Hitchcock spoof in “Bart of Darkness,” the terror of rampaging robots
in “Itchy and Scratchy Land,” Reverand Lovejoy’s daughter in “Bart’s
Girlfriend,” a chorus of “Que Sera Sera” in “Bart’s Comet,” hungry
frogs in “Bart vs. Australia,” mobster slapstick in “Homie the Clown,”
and other great episodes such as “A Star Is Burns,” “Lisa’s Wedding,”
“Two Dozen and One Greyhounds,” “Lemon of Troy,” “Treehouse of Horror
V,” and my all-time favourite episode, “Springfield Connection,” in
which Marge joins the police.
