  1. Glad that the series didn’t end with last season
I have to say I was pleased when I found out new episodes were coming this fall. I really enjoy this show, and I didn’t like the odd denouement with which they ended last season. Now I just need to make sure that the PVR records them.

  2. Yay, Shayera!
They can’t do enough Hawkgirl stories for my taste. Considering how easy it would be for them to focus on the "Big Three" (Supes/Bats/Wondy), it’s great how the writers go the extra mile to make the second- and third-tier characters shine.

As to the episodes themselves…The new Legion of Doom has started out just right. First off, it’s entirely proper and logical that so many villains would cooperate in this reality (the "Unlimited" Justice League has a ridiculous number of super heroes who are all active), and Grodd has his own good reason for offering his organizational skills to the villains. Including the Blackhawks (well, one at least) and referencing the Vandal Savage time travel storyline from the earlier series was a great example of the continuity in the Timm/Dini DC universe. It should be a good ride battling the Legion of Doom all season.

The second episode was excellent as well, though the existing romantic subplot is starting to seem dragged out. I particularly liked the way the mixed in elements of recent Hawk stories to continue building something new. In a way, JLU has become DC’s "Ultimate" universe. Many characters who have died (like Ice) are right there and the backstories have enough differences that when an episode addresses "classic" DC storylines, you can’t be entirely sure where they’re going because they aren’t required to stay consistent with the comic books. That being said, the preview of next week’s episode did show Supergirl in her new comic book costume but it’s not THAT different from the late-PAD Supergirl costume so I’m not going to complain despite my preference for the white baby T look.

ANYWAY, this is one fine cartoon series, and the fact that it features the best Batman actor of all time – Kevin Conroy – is just gravy. :)

The second episode didn’t “wow” me like the first one did.

Oh, BTW, I looked away for a moment so I missed something. How did Carter get wings? I saw him take off his shirt, his back was smooth, I looked down, I looked back up and he has wings. What did I miss?

Yeah, that caught me, too. There was one quick shot a little later where you could see that the wings are build into his “armor.” I’m hoping there’ll be a good screencap at The World’s Finest as soon as they start working through the new season.

Oh, and AMEN to the more Shayera this season!

The first episode was indeed better than the second, but I expect that when they’re doing an “origin issue.” If they could have done it without the almost throwaway super villain battle, it might have been a better episode – but, it would be that much harder to keep it a “kid’s show” at that point, which I figure is still part of the goal (despite its scheduling).

As for the wings, there was an odd cut there, either for time or animation convenience. I immediately made the decision to just pretend it didn’t happen. :)
