Boston.com’s Top 50 Sci-Fi Series

Boston.com has produced this list of the Top 50 Sci-Fi TV Shows of all time. As usual, the list is being disputed by sci-fi fans everywhere. My personal irritations include the inclusion of Star Trek: Voyager, Earth: Final Conflict (which made #50) and Andromeda, while omitting Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Angel (though Buffy placed five spots beneath Andromeda), and Red Dwarf. Other notable shows that aren’t included on the list are Robotech, Time Tunnel, and Charlie Jade.

  1. Terrible
I don’t know where they pulled this from, but it’s lousy.

Star Trek DS9, frequently considered the best Trek and heads and shoulders above Voyager (which made the list) didn’t make it. Neither did Farscape. Or The Prisoner.

But they have many shows that can only barely be considered sci-fi. If you hit your head several times.

Now for the stupid rankings. Futurama comes in at #41 while the Jetsons are at #25. ST Voyager at #14. Xena at #12. Stargate SG-1 at #6. Original Star Trek gets #1.

The list isn’t quite as huge a joke as the whiners are making it out to be.

Star Trek will and shall always be Number 1. It is the granddaddy of all Science Fiction television, it rightfully deserves its place at the top of these lists. The new Battlestar Galactica is an outright awesome show, though I wouldn’t mind if it was placed back a bit till it’s had more time.

The X-Files is a mainstream hit that while faultering near the end had so many fans that it deserves its place.

Star Trek: TNG had huge mainstream appeal, was the best of the Star Treks (IMHO) and really surpassed TOS in every department.

Babylon 5, I felt should be pushed up the list, it really is one of the greatest sci-fi shows of all time.

DS9 should definitely replace Voyager on the list, Farscape should definitely have been on the list, though not necessarily on the Top 10. I understand the mass appeal of SG-1 but I really don’t think it should be in the top 10. Other shows I feel probably should be on the list (considering what’s on the list) The Dead Zone and Smallville.

I don’t mind the ordering (I can understand TOS at #1 even if I don’t agree with it) quite so much as the serious omissions and the feeling like they padded it with a lot of garbage. Passing over DS9, Farscape, and the Prisoner for other shortrun or barely genre shows seems ill informed.

      • Re: Complete List
I don’t disagree with you on your points, other than ‘the whiners’ you are
referring too must be from another area but not this one.

My Favorite Martian? I must admit I’ve never seen this, but I thought it was a
        comedy
Third Rock from the Sun was a comedy

        At least they
        didn’t have Alf.

      • Re: Complete List
The problem with where to place SG-1, IMHO, is that the first four years were very good, seasons five and six were better than average, seven was okay, and this season they pretty much started a new show with some characters in common.

  2. Doctor Who
I guess I should just be estatic that Doctor Who placed #5. Was at a wedding rehersal dinner the other day and someone was sitting there trying to tell us how Stargate SG-1 was the longest running Sci-Fi show and four of us turned in unision and said “What about Doctor Who?” and the guy looked dumbfounded…”Is that really science fiction?”

Major loss of street cred there.

      Whop’s typoed…should be #8…still TOP 10 BABY!!!!

      “Most Redundent Series Name”, maybe…

      • Whiners.
Yeah, by whiners I meant those who were posting on the Boston web site. A lot of the complaints are pretty hillarious. Standard fan compaints about why “Obscure show no one’s ever heard of A” wasn’t number 1 on the list, thus making the entire list stupid.

Some fans really need to get a grip on reality. I might not like SG-1 as a classic (Despite there being 5 or so main plots reused repeatedly) but I can understand it’s huge fan following explains why it would be placed so high on the list despite I would disagree.

  3. Pretty reasonable
For the most part the list is fairly reasonable – TOS, BSG, B5, XFiles and TNG making the top five sounds about right.

On a related note, where’s the review of BSG 2×10?
