Supernatural Discussion – “Bloody Mary”

For the first time, this series has an episode
directed by someone whose name I don’t recognize. His
IMDB
listing
includes some notable shows that I simply
haven’t seen, though.

I am really starting to enjoy this show. The Bloody Mary episode was a lot of fun. It had a real creepy feel to it, and the shots of the spirit in silhouette were just perfect.
The one knock on this episode was the ending, where Bloody Mary crawled out of the broken mirror … it looked an awful lot like “The Ring.” It was very effective, but I felt like i’d seen it before.
Still, this show is rapidly becoming my favorite of the creep shows on TV this fall.

      Baseball?

Yeah, I’m bitter. In fact, I’m pretty sure this will be cancelled soon: It’s good.

Nah, it’s on the WB – they do cancel, but they tend to give it a couple of seasons first.

Again, this episode freaked me out. Lights on, oh-crap-why-is-that-mirror-there freaking out. That’s twice now that this series has done that, and I don’t tend to scare easily – they just seem to have a knack for building tension. The only thing that’s getting me is that, apart from the thing that got their mother/Sam’s Girlfriend, they always have a nice, clean wrap-up at the end of the episode. The X-Files knew not to do that – the best example from them being that flatworm-man – but this show hasn’t quite figured that out yet.

yeah i loved how x-files left you with that, “it’s still out there but dormant now” feeling. remember the one with the inbred family and the very end of that ep with them packing up the car and leaving town (forgot the name of the ep). what a great creepout! hopefully supernatural will figure this stuff out and stay afloat. i enjoy it quite a bit.

The X-Files episode was “Home,” from early in season four. (I think it was the second episode, following the season premier.) As for this episode of Supernatural, the thing that got me was that Dean’s eyes were bleeding, too. Is that because Mary can attack anyone once released from the mirror, or is it because he also has a secret that involves someone (such as his mother/father/brother’s girlfriend) getting hurt?

I would think that the very nature of what they do would have been enough for Mary, though at the time I assumed that it was simply because she was corporeal. Perhaps Dean does know more than he is letting on about their Dad…
