Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “My pick of the week, if you have a way to play 4K films, is the Arrow Video 4K release of David Lynch’s Dune, if you haven’t gotten the Limited Edition release in August.” Blaine says, “Lynch’s Dune, Donnie Darko, and the Raimi/Maguire Spider-Man trilogies are all must-own titles that I’ve seen. The fifth volume of Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema has movies I’ve never seen, but so did early volumes that I really enjoyed, so that’s also worth a look.”
I’m guessing the Dark Side of Hollywood series isn’t directly related to the 1998 documentary, The Dark Side of Hollywood? That was a good, if unsettling look at the B-movie industry. As for other films with “dark” in the title, I second Donnie Darko as a pick.
I have nostalgic recollections of the original Waltons The Homecoming (1971), which we own (the mother is played by Patricia “Klaatu barada nikto!” Neal, one of three actors replaced for the series). I do not know if I want to watch a contemporary remake/re-imagining of it. That said, the Ivanhoe up for offer (1952) is okay in a dated sort of way, but not as good as the 1997 mini-series.
The earlier Spider-man films (particularly the first one) give us what the MCU version does not: less cosmic super-hero action of the sort typical of early Spider-man. While we’re in New York, Wolf of Wall Street is worth seeing.
I’ve never watched My Stepmother is an Alien. Reviews are decidedly mixed, but I’ve heard it’s better than you’d expect. I’ve also never seen Ghost of Peter Sellers, but it might be interesting.
I am not a collector of physical media and own very few DVDs & Blue-rays. I will be getting that Cartoon Saloon Irish Folklore Trilogy set. All three of the movies are wonderful though Kells’ story to me seems the weakest of the three. Wolkwalkers was nominated for an Oscar for best animation (Soul won.) You can see how the story telling is getting better which each new movie. If you haven’t seen any of these movies, go and check them out. Keep on eye on Cartoon Saloon as they seem to be on a path of great things.
Thanks for the recommendation. They weren’t on my radar at all, but they sound interesting– and my wife is quite proud of her Celtic ancestry.
