Stargate SG-1 Breaks Longevity Record

Sci-Fi Channel has ordered another season of both SG-1 and Atlantis. This makes Stargate SG-1 the longest-running Science Fiction series in American television with 10 seasons. The previous record-holder was The X-Files (nine seasons) and before that Star Trek: The Next Generation (seven seasons).

Hats off to the SG-1 cast and crew for this milestone! Time for a “Stargate” section on B42?

I honestly don’t know if it can /really/ be considered the same show… but it’s still fun. And yeah I’ve been asking for a Stargate section for a while now (:

No show (other than the Simpsons) will ever be the same after 10 years, and you would hate it if it were. The entire premise of Stargate requires a fairly large amount of change over time. You wouldn’t expect a show that started with someone’s freshmen year at college to look the same when he’s gotten his medical degree and completed his residency.

  2. How many episodes, though?
Can you really call it the longest running when the ninth season was only 10 episodes long?

Plus, like Jethro said above it’s Farsgate now, and although I like Ben Browder I miss Richard Dean Anderson.

Huh? It’s something like 22 episodes.

You’re just confused by how the Sci-Fi Channel promotes it–they split up the season into two half-seasons, one running in the summer, and the other starting in January. They do the same for Battlestar Galactica and Atlantis.

In general, this means that the USA gets the first half of the season first, but the UK runs a regular season starting in the fall, and gets the second half of the season first.

That… may explain why Space is waiting until January to run it. Still, I seem to remember them promoting that tenth episode as the season finale…

Three month breaks are not cool.

Yeah, there seemed to be some miscommunication within the SciFi channels ranks. Sometimes they were saying “season finale” and sometimes the more correct “summer finale”, which just means the cliffhanger for the first half of the season.

They’ve been doing this for the past few years, splitting the seasons up into summer and winter half seasons and it’s really starting to get annoying.

I remember back to the Babylon 5 days when they spread 22 episodes out over 52 weeks. We would get new eps only on sweeps months with variable length gaps in between.
I like it better when I know that there will be a bunch of new ones in a row. Either that or save them up and run the whole season without a break.

I like having the episodes spread out, especially with so much other stuff to watch now (although nothing on Friday nights). I’d honestly like to see SG1 and Atlantis alternate in the same timeslot, so there wouldn’t be a rerun all year.

They did promote it as the season finale. Made me worried the series was cut short ;), but then I remembered they did this last season as well, albeit without promoting it as a season finale, rather as a summer finale.

  3. S9 better than S8 so far
S8 was getting way too corny, unfortunately especially any time RDA was on screen :-| S9, with the new beasties, has been much better so far.

  4. Excellent :)
Stargate is a wonderful sci fi show, though I do agree it’s far from the show it started out to be. I really like the new direction of the show since season 9, and while I always liked seeing RDA on the show, I don’t miss him too much now that’s gone.

  5. ST TNG
I think, technically, the second place mark should go to DS9, if not a tie with TNG.

  6. Stargate / Atlantis
I would definitely like to see a section devoted to SG-1 and Atlantis.

And I’m glad SG-1 will be coming back for a 10th season.
