West Side Story (2021) | |||||||||

Finally, the picks of the week. Alex says, “On the anime side, I’ve come to really love Princess Principal as a sort of Steampunk counterpart to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, so I’ll absolutely be picking up Crown Handler. Otherwise, there isn’t much that grabs me this week.” Blaine says, “I’ve heard good things about the new West Side Story and Brazil, but I haven’t seen either yet. Of the titles I’ve seen, my strongest recommendation is the 12 Monkeys movie (as opposed to the television series).”
I watched West Side Story last week and it was very good. They got actual Broadway actors for the roles and that already puts it head and shoulders above most Hollywood musicals. They beefed up the backstory on multiple characters so they all feel much more real. And kudos for putting Rita Moreno in, not as a cameo, but as a genuine, interesting character.
One of these days, I have to bite the bullet and watch the significant re-edit of Godfather III that is The Godfather Coda (I love the first two films, and put the third in a drawer with the Star Wars prequels).
Quite the week! Brazil is Gilliam’s masterpiece, though I also recommend 12 Monkeys. I’ve never seen a bad American Experience doc, Accused features a central performance that shouldn’t be missed, An American Werewolf in London is a piece of pop / horror culture worth seeing, even if (I suspect) some aspects have dated, and the particular listing of titles had me eye-skip and create Roger Corman’s Death Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown!.
I would put that last one at the top of my recommendation list, if it existed.
I’ve heard wonderful things about Brazil. I own the Criterion Collection edition, and really need to get around to watching it…
The beaches, the carnivale…
Seriously, I reviewed this back in aught-six as a retro weekend review and still consider it one of the best SF films ever made. I believe the Criterion edition contains the 94-minute studio edit, a
travestycuriosity that should only be watched, if at all, after one has seen Brazil.I’ve read over my review. Unfortunately, the movie just keeps getting more relevant.
I really need to bite the silver bullet and watch Werewolf.
