  1. Three hour movies
Three whole hours? Can you imagine how audiences would
have reacted to a three hour movie, say, way back before
they even had sound technology? Man, a three hour
    silent film
would have been from the start!

  2. Titanic
As I recall, Titanic was the first. I remember being shocked at how many 3 hour long movies came out after that. Most didn’t deserve to be that long.

Oh no, they go way back. As Fizko pointed out in his post, the 1912 ::ahem:: “epic” Birth of a Nation is 3 hours long. And more recently, Dances with Wolves runs 190 minutes. It’s nothing new at all, Uwe is just talking out of nether orifaces.

Even modern era, that’s wrong. People forget about The Deer Hunter @ 182 minutes. It even had an intermission.

Bringing back intermission looking better and better. All my 2:30+ classes in college take 10 minutes somewhere in the middle. Well, 2 didn’t. One guy would then let us out 15 minutes early. Dr. B, you still rock. The other would get distracted. Come to think of it… We would all pack put and start leaving, she would keep talking. “uh, Proffessor, class ended 5 minutes ago…”

Gettysburg (1993) was 259 minutes and did have an intermission. What a film…still watch it pretty regularly (being a bit of a Civil War buff helps).

Anything over (I think) 3:45 is legally required to have an
intermission. (I may have the exact length wrong, but
there is a limit.) Modern platter technology isn’t able to
hold films that are much larger.

If memory serves, The Cure for
            Insomnia
(1987) is still the longest movie ever made,
but that wasn’t really designed for entertainment value.

JFK as well, according to IMDB 189 minutes. I remember I went to go see this in college for some reason, I was shocked when they had an intermission.
