Bureau’s Breakroom’s Television Table – Week beginning 2022 June 26

It’s been busy so I haven’t had much time to get into the breakroom to catch up, but some of this week’s entries are really catching my eye.  First, we get the cast of Evil facing off against a Demon of Sex1.  Riverdale also faces off with the biblical, but it doesn’t sound nearly as much fun.  Westworld returns, however it isn’t giving us any clue what we’ll be getting.  Superman and Lois show the power of the press as the world is ending.  Ms. Marvel doesn’t give us a description or even a title.  The Flash finishes his season in the second half of a fatal finale.  The Orville doubles their Moclan children.  The Boys take a candle to bed.  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds quotes Tolkien at us.  Then, to wrap up the week, Stranger Things wraps up it’s fourth season with two more episodes.

[All synopses (and titles) from Trakt.tv below the cut, except when there really aren’t any. (If a show’s synopsis is a spoiler to you, do not click Continue reading →)]

  1. Westworld looks interesting so far. It felt like they might be doing a bit more linear storytelling, but this is Westworld. I didn’t notice any aspect ratio shenanigans indicating VR or what have you, but they have set a precedent for hiding that until the reveal.

  2. There’s a time gap from the previous series, so I’m not ruling out multiple timelines just yet, in which case my guess would be either that the events with the MiB are separate or we haven’t seen the alternate timeline yet. My hunch so far is that this season is exploring the idea that we’re all living in a simulation, which is what the MiB was acquiring, and that the scenes in the city are set within the sim with the mysterious tower being the control centre for it.

    Probably totally wrong, of course.

    • Yeah, I spotted it in a few other places as well, including verbally. “The Tower” is definitely this season’s motif, so might be a tell of sorts as to which timeline we are in or some other clue. Or it could just be the control facility for whatever is going on.

  3. So, in the Flash, the speedsters can just use Force Lightning and Palpatine whenever they want now?

Okay, the internal consistence/physics has always been strained, but I guess the divorce was actually finalized now.

  4. Also, did anyone else notice that The Orville got good? I mean, it’s much less Family Guy style now and feels much more Trek. Like off-brand Trek. Like you went to the store and they were out of Trek, so you bought the other brand, which isn’t Trek, but is perfectly serviceable.

  5. We’re a week behind on Trek and we won’t see Stranger Things until the fall, but we’re catching up on Station Eleven (some of the changes are arguably improvements) and The Boys is pretty much perfect.

But TB should only be approached by those who don’t need Trigger Warnings and where there is no chance of little kids seeing it.

    • My soon-to-be-ten year old walked in while I had the Black Noir scene in the last episode paused on my screen, and said “Oh, cartoons!”

No, no honey. You don’t want to watch this.
