  1. another castaway “lost”
I wish ABC had delivered on their more literal meaning (previous discussion). When Shannon ran into the trees, I wanted her to disappear without explanation. But, even when the gun shot was heard, I didn’t realize the two groups had found each other. The reactions were amazing! This was a very strong ending to an otherwise weak episode.

I think this adds more evidence to my "purgatory" theory. Shannon finally found someone to believe in her. So, as with Boone, with her "soul" (or whatever) at peace, she could pass on. Of course, who knew passing on from purgatory would be so painful?

In regards to my comments on the previous episode (link), it’s no longer safe to assume the teddy bear belongs to Alex, as the Shrink asked if they’d seen "the kids". I guess we’ll have to wait until next week to see what happened to the other castaways.

actually, I’ve heard the writers specifically deny the purgatory/they’re dead/in hell theories. sorry, but that one’s out.

  2. speaking backwards?
Anybody know what Walt said in the tent?

I went back over it, the last time we see the brunette she hands her stick to the shrink, and the shrink climbs up the hill. Just like that, abandoned.

      "They’re coming and they’re close"

I feel the others are 2 seperate factions. The ones on the boat didn’t seem very mystical or spooky like those of the forest. They both need children for some reason, and that’s probably the key to the whole thing. The child with the teddy bear may be one of the kids taken from the tail section survivors as the shrink asks specifically if they saw any kids.

I couldn’t help but laugh at realizing that Shannon’s death was very formulaic. Girl has sex, girl sees/hears weird thing, runs into the forest, dead. She actually thought a Labrador would lead her to Walt by scent, I’m glad she’s shot @_@

Agreed. At the beginning of the episode (knowing, thanks to the promos, that someone would be “lost forever”), I told my wife that Shannon might as well be wearing a red Starfleet uniform.

Well, 3 if you count the tail survivors, they get called “others” too, though mostly from Chewie : )

        P.S. Thanks for the Walt-speak

  3. Character Development
The interesting thing I noticed in this episode is that _again_ the writers do a large amount of character development then, bang, off someone.

Throughout the series I haven’t cared much about Shannon. In fact for many episodes, she was quite unlikable. Now in this one, they show a backstory (and forestory too) where we really feel for the character, where previously her backstory has made her look pretty bad.

Just like with the high school teacher last season, but moreso, they really establish more of the character and then hit you with their death.

I think its really effective writing, but will become more noticible if insignificant or 2nd tier characters are getting more screen time that something bad is going to happen.

The best thing about this is the intensified anxiety that it will create when the survivor tribes merge (did I just write that?!). I guess I better stop now….
